All the best planning happens at four o’clock am.

The silk curtains bellowed harshly against the wind. It quieted down as a pair of small hands slid the window closed, before the tiny figure perched on the side of the bed, poking at a sleeping lump.

“Ne, Kaoru, you awake?”

The four-year-old’s eyes blinked out slowly, “Mmm?” as his eyes adjusted to the identical face of his brother, “Nani, Hikaru?”

His older brother crawled back into their bed, their hands connecting automatically.

“Something up?” Kaoru asked quietly, when his brother didn’t say anything. Hikaru didn’t answer, only tightening his grip.

The wisps of air blew against the glass window; the clock struck four am.

“… Mother says, that we’re going to something called school today,” Hikaru murmured.

The curtains hovered motionlessly. The moonlight filtered in through the thick glass.

Kaoru simply blinked, before replying, “It’s not that bad, Hikaru. We… can make friends, ne?”

A gust of wind shuddered against the outside walls. A shiver crawled down Kaoru’s spine.

“I don’t need anyone but Kaoru,” the elder twin muttered, “Who cares about everyone else.”

“Mm, who cares,” Kaoru nodded, peeking from behind his soft brown strands to look at Hikaru’s scarily neutral expression, “We don’t need anyone else.”

The younger of the two shifted slightly, his hazel eyes sliding closed.

“Everyone else is stupid anyway,” Hikaru continued bitterly, his whispers cutting cleanly through the air.

“Yeah, no one understands,” Kaoru said coldly, squeezing his twin’s hand in comfort. He mumbled against the pillow, “No one will ever understand.”

“Yeah.”

The shadows danced a slow waltz along the marble floor.

“I don’t want to go to school, Kaoru.”

“Me neither.”

“Let’s hide in the closet so they won’t find us.”

Kaoru blinked a little, before whispering back, “What about the attic? The nannies don’t look there and the maids don’t clean it. There are toys there too.”

Hikaru turned towards him, a smiling glint in his eyes, and Kaoru felt warm and fuzzy that he made his brother happy. In the next second, Hikaru slipped out of bed, his feet landing onto the marble floor slowly.

“Okay. Let’s be quiet so no one can hear us.”

Kaoru nodded, before following his brother out of bed, following his brother as he’d always done.

The silvery winds threaded through the iron rails, bouncing against the grassy lawn. It tugged against his light brown locks, as he leaned against the night-chilled iron, lacing around his light blue blazer.

“Kaoru…? What are you doing out here?”

The teenager turned around, smiling as he saw the familiar figure of his brother running up to him, “Nothing,” he admitted truthfully, “Just thinking.”

Hikaru raised a brow, blinking, confused because Kaoru didn’t normally think at four in the morning, “About what?”

Kaoru shrugged dismissively, “Nothing much. I was wondering about what milord said we had to do for today’s cosplay themes…”

The elder twin leaned against the gates, studying his brother intently as he finished-

“… I mean… humanoid animals… where does he get these ridiculous ideas?” Kaoru scoffed, crossing his arms, “I don’t really want to dress up today.”

A sly smile widened on Hikaru’s face, “What do you suggest we do then?”

Kaoru pretended not to notice the playful glint in his eyes, and answered casually, “We could feign sickness.”

“Or hide out in the Art Room.”

“And then burn the cat costumes.”

“And accidentally lock ourselves in.”

“Or spill coffee on it; raise Haruhi’s debt.”

The wind paused as Hikaru’s fingers laced through Kaoru’s hair.

“You know, Kaoru…” Hikaru said slowly, his smile sharpening slyly, “We could just screw the Host Club and… you know… do what you want in the backroom.”

“Or, in the faculty room after school,” Kaoru added, matching his twin’s mischievous smile.

“Or-“

Hikaru pinned his brother against the large iron gates, before licking his lips predatorily-

“Right now.”

Kaoru laughed, “But what does that have to do with skipping Host Club?”

“Kaoru, I don’t want them to find out,” Hikaru pouted a little, just as his brother pressed his lips against his-

“You mean, our friends,” Kaoru smiled softly, “I don’t want to lose them either.”

“Yeah.”

A blanket of silence wrapped around them. Kaoru poked his twin’s forehead.

“So… now?”

“No, I want to freak out milord if he just so happens to find us doing that- yes, Kaoru, now.”
