Tachibana had never imagined the circumstances of their reunion to be like this. Years after they had first met each other in interschool tournament, he still expected to run into Tezuka in a tennis court somewhere, and then they would play against each other.

Not like this, in a white corridor filled with the scent of antiseptics, and Tezuka on the floor.

Tachibana was accompanying his mother to the hospital for her regular body check. Bored with just standing in the corridor waiting, he went up to the vending machine for a drink. After getting his soda, Tachibana turned around, and promptly knocked somebody down.

"Oh! I am terribly sorry! Here, let me..." Tachibana trailed off as he took in the sight before him - the person was using crutches. Oh no, he had really screwed up. "Are you alright? Should I call a doctor? Is there-"

"I am fine," the person gritted out, but made no move to stand. Tachibana was starting to panic again when the person looked up, and frowned. "Tachibana?"

"Who..." The surprise of being recognised was just enough to draw Tachibana out of his frantic state. "... Tezuka? What happened?" He proceeded to pull the other man up.

Tezuka's legs buckled as soon as he stood, and Tachibana held him up in alarm. "Car accident," Tezuka panted against his cheek as he tried to regain his footing. "Three weeks ago." He caught his balance, and relaxed his tight grip on Tachibana's arms. Nodding to the crutches on the floor, he asked, "Can you pick those up for me?"

Tachibana stepped back gingerly, making sure Tezuka could stand on his own before bending to fulfil his request. "How bad was it?" He asked as he handed the apparatus back.

Tezuka nodded his thanks. "Just scrapes and bruises mostly - I was quite lucky. But there was a hip joint dislocation, and I still cannot put weight on my right leg." He shrugged a little, then looked Tachibana over with some concern, "What brings you here?"

"Nothing to worry about; my mother is having a body check." Tachibana glanced back at the corridor. "She is in one of those rooms." Making a quick decision, he smiled. "Stay with me for a while? It gets boring around here."

Tezuka considered for a moment, and agreed. Searching for something to say, Tachibana suddenly realised he still had the can of soda in his hand. "Would you like a drink? My treat for knocking you down." He cringed at the mentioning, eyeing Tezuka's side. "Are you really alright?"

"I am fine." Tezuka patted his hip lightly. "This does not hurt. If something is wrong it would. Do not worry." Flooded with relief at the answer, Tachibana found himself appreciating the line of Tezuka's slender frame. He managed to turn his eyes away before he started staring.

"I am very sorry." Ducking his head to hide his embarrassment, Tachibana remembered the train of conversation. He turned to the vending machine, "So what would you like?"

They had reunited under rather undesirable circumstances. But as they parted ways with promises to meet again soon, Tachibana could not help to think it might well be a fortunate encounter, the beginning of something beautiful.

Comments and critiques welcomed. And mm, I really like this story, so there may be a sequel?
