Once and again...

I keep mulling over the story arc from this week's Once Upon a Time, and my initial annoyance at Rumpelstiltskin being involved in EVERY major fairy tale remains, but I can't help but be compelled by Robert Carlyle. The man is sublime, and watching him and Lana Parrilla go head-to-head is a delicious thrill. They're just pros. And I'm glad that the ( Read more... )

Ahh, so you *haven't* been reading theories then?

Because Regina is, by popular theory at the very least, the Miller's Daughter. Henry MILLS. The story as far as I know it...

The Miller boasts (erroniously) of his daughter's ability to spin straw into gold. These boasts reach the king's ears and impresses him. His immense greed causes him (depending on which version of the tale you prefer) to entrap her/enslave her, threatening her life/her father's life/her freedom/whatever... until she can spin a room of straw into gold.

Of course, she cannot do it and begs for help. Rumplestiltskin helps, yadda yadda, the king demands aggain and Rumpie complies, for the third time the king promises her lots of riches/untold wealth/his love/whatever unhappy ungoldspinning miller's daughters want and this time Rumpie demands her first born. She agrees, the idea of her firstborn being abstract at that point, however once she does get the love of her king (her life, an iPod, whatever) and becomes pregnant, she is unable to go forth with the deal.

This king, of course, being Snow's Father. The popular theory being that the thing Snow did to be the Queen's undoing was to tell the king that the Queen was not the one to spin the straw to gold, probably costing her the king's love/fidelity/loyalty/trust.

I'm unclear as to the specifics, so a fairy tale enthusiast can probably flesh that out, but it seems to me with the latest episodes... especially that of Snow's father and the genie/mirror, this theory is now on shaky ground.

That said, however, this is the first I'm hearing about Rumplestiltskin ever being married. Do tell?

Oh, that Regina is theoretically the miller's daughter from the original Rumpelstiltskin tale was something I knew! I'd sort of forgotten the application of it in this instance, though, what with her being all EQ-y in the flashbacks and clearly in possession of power.

I think R's wife left him because of his extreme cowardice,..so it would be interesting to me if, in a twist on the original tale, he'd wed the miller's daughter himself and they were raising their child (not the king's) together until she skipped off to find a better life. Then, perhaps, Snow found out about the EQ leaving them behind and marrying her father?

Ok, yes, I didn't even get that you were referring to Rumplestiltskin's wife in the show, I thought you knew a different fairy tale in which... ok.

I should sleep more, maybe then my brain would work.

Ooooh, I like that theory. Could you imagine? Rumpy and Regina are exes? Which means she abandoned her son... ohhh, the deliciousness.

Which kinda gets me thinking. Rumpy lived in fairytale bad times, what with the ogre wars and the evil king who sacrificed all the kingdom's children to fight (or possibly feed) the ogres. You could then say that the original king that imprisoned the Miller's daughter was this land's evil king... Rumpy helps her (but then... he didn't have powers before then, so that kind negates the entire theory, but moving on), they get married and then she splits because of his cowardice. Cue the story line we saw in the show.

She moves off to a happier land where the only evil is her and...

No, I can't fanwank it now that has popped in my head.

It would be cool, but he lost his wife before his powers, and he couldn't save the Miller's daughter without them.

They seriously need to do some time line exposition in this show.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Rumpy being human and married, was in an earlier worse time, then he got his powers... terrorised faux Belle with her even faux-er accent (seriously? Claire, go find your baby)... and then slowly the ogre wars got better.. and Snow's father...

Oh but even THAT doesn't make sense, because Regina had her powers and was clearly fully evil by the time Belle came around.

I give up. *sigh*

I have no patience.
