J'ouvert (also spelled as Jouve) and pronounced 'juuvay', is a large street party during Carnival in the eastern Caribbean region. J'ouvert is a contraction of the French jour ouvert, or day open (morning).

J'ouvert is celebrated on many islands, including Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, Sint Maarten, Trinidad and Tobago, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands. It is also a feature of New York City's Labor Day Carnival held in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn and Notting Hill Carnival in London, both areas that have a large Caribbean ex-pat communities.

On my way home from my cousin's house I saw the cops blocking off streets for when the 'juuvay' begins tonight. I keep telling myself, year after year, that I'll go, but I have yet to. Whatever... I think the parade in the morning will be enough for me. I'm sleepy. Also, fuck Microsoft updates for causing more problems than they solve.

Oh, and for anyone who's sure McCain's VP choice was a nail in the coffin, read and despair, my poor, poor, optimistic friends. Ex-pat status never looked so right.

ETA: What I found slightly amusing about that "support Hillary(!!!11!1)" thread I linked to above is that... they start to see that the thread is garnering a lot of attention. 40,000... 50,000... 60,000 views. Their belief? "LIEK OMG! TEH INTERNETS MUST TOTALLY LOVE AND SUPPORT US!" I actually wanted to register just so I could plant the seed that, perhaps people aren't coming here to support you, but to mock you... and discovered that registration for the board is closed.

They are trapped in a self-aggrandizing bubble of utter stupidity; and I don't know whether to be gleeful or morose.
