First on the agenda - I'm tentatively looking into partitioning my laptop drive (all 40GB of it) and putting a Unix distro (probably Ubuntu) on my machine.  Two questions to anyone who knows anything about suchlike.  Firstly, how much space do I need on my Ubuntu partition?  Would five to ten gigs suffice ( Read more... )

openSUSE 8D. Fedora Core isn't bad either.

I'd pick almost anything over Ubuntu. Both SuSE and Fedora Core encapsulate the spirit and underlying functionality of Linux much better than Ubuntu.

My dislike of Ubuntu comes after using it for several months and finding that it just doesn't handle things right. SuSE was my first distro. I had a much nicer experience with it than Ubuntu.
