First on the agenda - I'm tentatively looking into partitioning my laptop drive (all 40GB of it) and putting a Unix distro (probably Ubuntu) on my machine.  Two questions to anyone who knows anything about suchlike.  Firstly, how much space do I need on my Ubuntu partition?  Would five to ten gigs suffice?

Secondly, I attempted to run live discs of both the current build of Ubuntu (7.10 Gutsy Gibbon, if I am not gravely mistaken) and an older one (5.10).  The older one ran successfully, but 7.10 gave a cryptic error message while booting and flashed all sorts of arcane colors on my screen instead of the Ubuntu home screen.  Is this common, or does God hate me?

(also, any recommendations of decent Ubuntu-compliant LISP compilers would be greatly appreciated.)

Just say something.  Tell me a story, whine about random crap, express your long-held desire for Ulfgar, whatever.  Entertain me, and I'll entertain you back.

Interesting idea: Insult me, then justify that insult.  If I consider it valid I'll perform some form of forfeit - specified by you.
