Okay, it's time for an update. So...my journal project kind of went down the drain...but I figure maybe instead I can just keep kind of a summary of each week? Here goes the summary for this week:
Monday:
This was our first day of classes. Breakfast on hall is pretty much served only between 8:15 and 8:30, but this is generally okay as I have a 9 am course every day of the week except Wednesday and occasionally Friday. I like how meals are served here...even if the food isn't that great; everyone on hall pretty much has to eat at the same time, as meals are served in 15-30 minute time slots. While this is a little nasty for scheduling, it does improve the camaraderie of the hall.
My first class is in St Mary's College. You walk into a quad of 17th (?) century buildings, turn right and then take an old stone spiral staircase up to the first floor. SO COOL!!!! The windows of the classroom show the thickness of the walls - they're at least three feet thick. Church History II seems like it will be interesting; I really like the historical part of it - reminds me a lot of Medieval Book - but the theological aspect will be new to me...and interesting as well. From that 9 am course I have to dash across campus (20 minute walk) to the Purdie Building (not "purdie" at all - ugly 60's architecture) to my 10 am Modern Materials class. I'm not quite sure what I think of it yet, so far the subject matter has been rather dry...but maybe we'll eventually get to interesting materials.
After chem it is back to Atholl (JB Hall's nickname) for a brief rest before heading up North Street into the medieval part of town for my modern history course. I dislike the large size of the class, but I think I'm going to enjoy 'The Old Order and Its Transformation'. On most Mondays I will have lab right after lunch back at JB and then head straight to my chem lab. I get my first lab coat!!!! That's very exciting for me!
Monday afternoon was spent running errands around town and meeting friends for coffee, etc. Back to JB in time for dinner, and then sitting in the Front Hall for banter, as I had no homework yet. The best place to sit in Front Hall is on the radiator...the one place in this dorm where I am actually WARM!
It was 'Jacket Night' and Frosty Monday (Frosty is the cheapest brand of cider (and I don't mean 'apple') that you can buy. I did not partake in the drinking, but it was nice to converse with people. I did have a sip of alcohol (not Frosty, I've heard it is horrible stuff) - Creme de Menthe - offered by Senior Stud (everyone on hall has nicknames - Duchess, Princess, Senior Stud, TAB, Pinto, Tron, etc - mine is fast becoming 'Hat-Kat' or 'Hattie').
Tuesday:
Classes in the morning. More errand running in the afternoon. Did some reading for class. Nothing new during the day...except that it was the first day since I've been here that it actually rained. This canceled our hall activity for the evening - a scavenger hunt - so I watched 'Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason' with some hallmates instead. It was so WEIRD to see Dr. Gaius Baltar from BSG as Tom. I mean, REALLY, REALLY, WEIRD. AND NO ONE ELSE HAD WATCHED BSG!!!!!! TEH TRADEGY!!!! :-p
Afterward went to Cheesy Tuesdays dance night at Ma Bell's - the pub frequented by the prince when he was here and fellow 'Ya's' - with S, M, G, A, L, and E. It is quite a fun place for dancing to 80's, Britney Spears, and Madonna, though.
Wednesday:
No classes today! I slept in until the fire alarm went off - no fun in incredibly cold temperatures and pajamas. After lunch I went to the Refreshers Fayre and contemplated joining numerous societies. I'm hoping to join Celtic soc and possibly the hillwalking soc - they do some easy walks that I think I might try. Other possibilities include film soc, juggling soc, and history soc, but I'll have to see what I have time for. After that Nataly and I went 'bop' shopping at the charity shops. I brought only one short skirt here and it's much to nice to wear to the 'bop' - where it really is quite necessary to wear a short skirt because it gets so warm. Found a very inexpensive skirt, shirt, and tie to wear to this week's 'bop' - the 'school bop' where everyone dresses in raunchy versions of public school (for the Americans - read: private school) dress.
I was going to spend the evening in, but at the last minute I got invited to go out with a group - Duchess, Senior Stud, S and A - to the cinema where we saw 'Match Point'. An interesting film, but I'm not sure I'd really recommend it to anyone.
Thursday:
Classes in the morning. My first tutorial in the afternoon. Not bad; it'll be nice to have a chance to discuss what we're learning in lecture. Thursday night was Capture the Flag - Atholl version. We played girls v. boys and everyone came decked out in black and camouflage. More on this later - now I have to go to class!
