Death by Orgo

Oct 03, 2006 22:30

First orgo exam tonight.

Eight problems, two hours. It was horrific.

I think I maybe got close to full credit on three problems. Two problems I didn't know what to do, so I wrote down random stuff that halfway pertained to the question, hoping I'd get some sort of partial credit.

I felt semi-confident coming out of it; I knew I didn't get some problems, but I felt like overall, I did better than others. But after talking to Anu and Henry about the details of some of the problems, I discovered that I really missed a lot. One question I know I misread, as Anu pointed out, and that totally changes everything. Most of the questions depended on itself; you needed part (A) right to get (B) through (D) right, etc, and I know I got the first part wrong on a couple.

The exams are going to be available tomorrow at 1 pm. The TAs get a full 16 hours to grade these complex free-response tests. I do have a break then, but I'm both afraid and anxious at the same time. It's one of those things where you want to know and don't at the same time.

The grading sucks in this class. Not only is it outrageously hard so you feel dumb, but you don't really know how you stand. They will tell us how we compare with our peers, but who knows where the cut-off for A- is? My goal is a B, as I feel that is very respectable, and hopefully I'll do well in my other classes.

The last thing I want to do is go to the 9 am orgo lecture tomorrow.
