Today was infinitely better than yesterday.
There are only 6 people in my REU program. But there are two other REU programs on campus: Civil Engineering (with about the same number of people as mine) and Environmental Engineering (with 10-12 people). We (just the ChemE's) met in the Engineering complex this morning and went over administration stuff and had a quick overview of the program. Then we all went to see our respective grad student to discuss the particulars of our research.
Pizza was provided for lunch and I got a chance to really talk with the others in the program. I'm the only one that goes to Wash U, but two guys are transferring here in the fall, and one other guy lives in the area. Most of them are juniors and seniors, but it's so hard to tell ages anymore, that I couldn't tell. I definitely don't feel young, though.
We talked a lot about Wash U and the area in general, since I am familiar with it. It was nice to have a ready-made conversation starter and not have to go through all those trite conversations that are inevitable for groups of people just meeting each other. Everyone was really interested in knowing about the area and what I thought about Wash U.
We were free for the afternoon, so I ran some errands. I went to the storage facility and brought back my bike and TV. That was a mess since my bike was all greasy and I got stuff on myself and in my nice clean car. I got the cable set up on ResTech, but I can't access it until someone comes out and hooks it up for me. I also tried to purchase internet (even though it costs an arm and a leg, but I really like the convenience of having it in my room), but found out that oh, I already have internet. So it's free. Well, at least until it suddenly realizes I'm not paying. Maybe this room is set up until the end of May, in which case I'll have to pay in a couple of days. But I really hopes this lasts all summer. That would be so nice.
Then we had a BBQ in Forest Park for all the REU-ers here. There are several people in the programs that go to Wash U, including one of my fellow sophomore chemical engineers (he's actually in the Environmental Engineering program). After we had eaten our fill, I gave a tour of the Loop and Clayton to three of the people in the ChemE REU. We had a nice walk along the Loop and got Ben and Jerry's. They are such nice people, and I hope we continue to hang out with each other, seeing how there are many people here.
Speaking of, however, I did see THREE people I knew today. All of them I know through David, but I know them nonetheless. It was exciting.
This evening I've been enjoying my internet and doing some reading for my research. Then Michelleanne called, and I had a good long chat with her.
I feel so much better today, social-wise. Yesterday was yucky.
