Over Thanksgiving weekend, our Boy Scout troop worked at Bass Pro Shops in Garland, TX by helping customers by sacking purchases and carrying them out to their cars. Our understanding was that our scouts would work for tips and Bass Pro Shops would offer an additional cash donation to the troop for their services. This money would have gone for summer camp and for 'Scouterships' to pay for boys that might need a little help with their Scout expenses. It was a little inconvenient for us because we had to cut our trip home short and come back early but we figured it was worth it. It was a cold, windy day but our scouts helped out where they could and they enjoyed doing it.
Then the other shoe dropped and the only good thing that I can say about it is at least they waited until after Christmas. Bass Pro Shops has informed all the troops involved that 'they don't do cash donations' so now the money that we were expecting is just what tips they did get. *sighs* Unfortunately, no one had thought to get this fund raiser in writing so all we have is a verbal agreement which is absolutely NO GOOD. It's just a sad state of affairs when a business will take advantage of kids working to better themselves. These are good kids and they deserved to be treated better.
Needless to say, there will not be many Scout families shopping at Bass Pro Shops anymore.
