I opened up the faucet, so now it is going to just all pour out, I guess. I don't know what moderation is...hence my less than svelte appearance

Zoe's rats died a couple of years ago and we didn't replace them due to Luci's allergies. They lived for about 3 years. They were great. Super sweet and very attached to her. Easy to clean up after. We had females, which are not as cuddly, but also do not smell as bad. In fact, I didn't smell them at all if we kept the cage decently clean. Males, so I've been told, are very cuddly and smelly. Females are busy. They do not sit and cuddle. They have stuff to do, always on the move! But they play fun games and are easy to train, just as males are. The male/female decision really depends on why you want them. Zoe doesn't sit still either, so cuddly was not really necessary. She loved building them playscapes and devising games for them and crawling around the floor with them following her. They never once bit her on purpose, though there was a couple of accidently nips. They were incredibly tolerant and gentle. Females, especially, really need stimulation and company; new toys and games and chewies regularly and lots of interaction. No rats should be kept alone. They need a fairly large cage with levels and places to climb. Conventional pet store cages sold for rats are not really large enough to be healthy for them. I highly recommend a good quality pellet food and regular fruit and veggie treats (Zoe made them a daily salad with egg and other stuff in it), not pet store mixes. They will live a lot longer that way. Care fresh bedding is good. Be prepared to spend some money on vet bills. If they get sick it is spendy.
