This turned into a horribly disjointed comment I wrote in 4 different sittings. So, with my apologies:
We do a lot of non-gift stuff and try to really go nuts celebrating "the season." We always make a ton of shaped gingerbread cookies and also candy canes made of pipe cleaners and those little triangle beads - together, they comprise most of the ornaments on our tree. And we continuously pile chocolate (fancy wrapping) ornaments and actual candy canes onto it, too, since they just seem to magically disappear :p About half the time we string cranberries and/or popcorn on it, and there is often a whole gingerbread house from scratch. Taken together there are usually about 5 evenings in December around here spent working on these sorts of things as a group, with Christmas pandora on. Then the shopping for the tree and the decorating the house/yard are other days. We also give everyone pajamas on Christmas Eve night, and do a special dinner on Christmas night. Grant usually has a chunk of days off during winter break, too. Santa's Enchanted Forest. You can make it fun and magical and family-like, with big kids!
Aaaaanyway. Gifts-wise I'm definitely less excited about the big kids' stuff this year. Ananda is really desperately overdue for things like bras and underwear, new derby knee pads, tights, the lip balm she likes...and I can't think of anything that would excite her more than for me to give her a card that says, "we're going clothes shopping" as her big gift, because when she's NOT in a school uniform she lives in about one pair of shorts, all the time. I did get her a real human rib for her stocking that I know she's going to flip over. Did you know you can buy a real human rib on Amazon for $10?
Elise has been the one we keep having to STOP buying things for, this year. We've gotten all excited about so many different things for her. It's ridiculous, she has three times as much as anyone else at the moment O_o
