That dreaded day has arrived, the first day of school! I really hated school, and now I get to hate it all over again as I go through yet another 13 years. *sigh*
As bad as it all seems, from my point of view any ways, it might not be all that bad. Allura is really excited for school and can't wait for more. I wonder if there was ever a time that I liked school as much as she does? I think I did when I was in Kindergarten and First grade, but after that it started to go down hill..... I'll have to keep my eye out for that period of time I guess.
Allura and I attended a one hour session at her school to give us a tour and.... well I assume so we know what they well be doing at school but honestly the whole thing was so rushed that I had to ask for ever bit of information that I needed and still walked away feeling like I didn't know anything. No one else seemed to care, I'm pretty sure they just couldn't wait to get rid of their kids.
The school is nice and of course they have a lot of things I never had when I was a kid. They have a music room which my grade school did not have (although I think they finally added one when I was in 5th or 6th grade). They have a really nice library which they call "the resource room" (what's wrong with library?). They have a computer room. We definately didn't have one of those, we barely had a computer. One for the whole school, 6 grades. They have a cafeteria, ours was in the gymnasium. I thought it was amusing though that their stage is in the gym, just like when I was a kid. Oh, and they also have an art room. Our art teacher had to bring us the art supplies on a rolling cart and conduct class in our normal class room. How times have changed. :)
Allura's teacher seems very nice, I just wish we could have had a chance to talk to her more and find out more about the make up of their day. I have a schedule that tells what days and time they go to gym, the resource room, music class, art class, and the computer room. It feels more like Jr High than Kindergarten. They even have little cubbies out in the hall that are like lockers without a door for their bag, coat, ect.
After touring the school in about 10 minutes or less and getting the chance to get on a bus that was parked outside we went back to the classroom to pick up our paper work and that was that. I found out that there is a bathroom in the class room (very glad to hear!) and that the teacher would love it if any parents could volunteer to help out at the beginning of the day with odd jobs and tasks that are hard for her to be able to do. I think that will be great for someone like me who is worried all the time, if I can see that Allura is happy and safe I am sure it will be easier for me to deal with her being away from me.
After the fair we came home and collected Laban, who had been sleeping since he came home at 7:30 Am from work. It would be a long day for him but today was the only day we would be able to go to the fair as a family unless we wanted to go on Saturday right before Labor Day which is one of the bussiest days and I really don't want to be there when it is like that.
We got to the fair and they parked us at the best gate, I haven't been able to get in at that gate in years. Right at the top of the midway by the ferriswheel. We were in the second row, any closer and we would have been ON the midway! What luck! It was car load day so Laban, Allura, and myself only paid $15 for all 3 of us to get in. I purchased a ride bracelet in advance at Price Chopper for Allura and one for myself so we were ready to go.
Since we didn't get to the fair until just after 11 AM I wanted us to go on some rides first, while it was pretty dead. First stop at Allura's request was the Merry Go Round. She was a little scared at first since she had to pick one of the big horses that goes up and down. She thouht it was too fast but I told her it was just like riding a real horse and she calmed down. After that we came back 2 more times later in the day, I think we have a winner. :)
Our next stop was her original favorite ride, the Tea Cups. She was so afraid of the Merry Go Round last year that we had to get off before it started but she loved the Tea Cups. We tried several other things which some were a big hit and others she was scared to death. I guess she's still a little small, but they were all kiddie rides so I thought she would be ok. The kiddie coaster still scares her, its kind of a rough ride I guess. She was scared to death when we got to the end of the fun house (she had no problem with the mirrors or the stairs) she was afraid of the slide at the end though. I finally coaxed her into sitting on my lap to ride down the circular slide. Once that was over she wanted to do it again. She realized slides are fun!
My favorite ride was closed, the Tornado (the one with the round swivel seats and the platform that raises until it is almost standing on end). It has a lot of problems as it is geting pretty old now, the guy running it said they've had it about 20 years. It's also their most popular ride and the best non-roller coaster ride ever made (if you ask me, and several others I've talked to). They said it'd be ready after 3 PM. After getting our fill of rides we toured the shops under the Grand Stand and went through the commercial building. We found the vegetable entries of Allura's cousins and her Aunty Lulu and renewed our Costco membership at the Costco booth.
It was a wonderfully sunny day and the temperature was just fantastic. It never got crowded, even by 5 PM when we were leaving it still was not busy at all. Some of the kiddie rides were starting to get fairly full loads of kids but all the bigger rides were still running with any where from 1 to 5 people on them. The Tornado was finally open and I got my chance to ride, I was the only one on it. On the way out we grabbed french fries from Al's for Allura (at her request) and a fried dough with pizza sauce for me. It really disgusts me that the fried dough was as much as a lobster when they are on sale. $6 for fried dough, but it's not like I make it at home, but I think I am going to start!!
Exhausted, we all came home and relaxed. Allura and I fell asleep on oppsite ends of the sofa and Laban played his stupid on-line game. Thus ended the day as I never woke up until about 9 PM when Laban transferred Allura to her bed and I got up as I decided to get things ready for school tomorrow.
