People getting crazy amounts of money are statistical outliers. They speculated on the second hand market by happening to have something sought after completely out of proportion to its retail price.
I can only speak for the people selling RPGs, because that's what I look at, but most of the dedicated merchants sell for a bit less than MSRP plus shipping costs.
Don't forget to put a link to the BKC journal in your signature in the forums and mailing lists you participate in. It's not spamming; it's mindshare. :-D

I've noticed the gaming merch is waaaaay cheap and I wonder how they do it. I've been picking up old stuff lately at stupidly cheap prices that should just happen.
I still hear about people getting lots of money for random stuff all the time and they've had people write books about it.
I don't think I will ever be rich but if I can continue to live the way I do and maybe up the standards even just a little I will be happy. :)
