The Scent of Water - Alison Hoblyn (Transita)
What a beautiful book this is - and it's no surprise to find out that the author is herself an artist since she her descriptions are so vivid! I could almost feel the Tuscan sun and smell the flowers in the gardens!
There are references to the Renaissance philospher Ficino and to Botticelli's painting Primavera - which do of course fit in so perfectly and enhance the story
I found this book very calming and peaceful - despite the inner turmoil of some of the characters - which does at times bubble to the surface, so all is not exactly perfect in the garden! There is a lot going on with the plot - romance, and some surprises for the reader, but still the overall effect this novel had on me is one of beauty and peace.
I'd also like to thank the author (through Nerine of course!) for introducing me to the artist Dennis Severs - I've just checked out his living piece of art (a whole house in Spitalfields!) on the web, and I can't wait to visit!
