We had our powderpuff game against the MSIs yesterday, so hopefully this will be the last time I use this tag. It was a complete shutout: we beat them 41 to 14. In spite of practicing the short-pass to me, we never used it, so I got to amuse myself by bouncing the first-years around (quite literally). It was pretty hilarious. They had two bigger girls who thought they could run through me and when they tried the couldn't even move me. I pissed one girl off so much, she ran into me, bounced back, ran into me again with about as much success as the first time, then shoved me. Even if I were prone to getting angry, the fact that her push had no more effect than her running into me was really hilarious. Also, at one point, they put a tiny stick of a blonde in front of me and she tried to run through me, failed, then, since smaller people seem to have agility on their side, tried to run around me. I just stuck out my knee and kept her in. The coach saw this and made some comment that I can't remember know, but it conveyed the fact that he found my antics hilarious.
Today I subbed in for a player in Ultimate in the competitive league. I'm not nearly good enough to be an asset, so I doubt I'll be invited back. However, that guy played on the same team I ended up subbing for and, despite the fact that I don't have that absurd, ridiculous crush on him anymore, he's quite fun to talk to. Also, I got a lot of running in, seeing as I played the entire first game and the vast majority of the second (only sitting out two points).
But, the real reason for this post is to say that I've recently gotten in to The Thick of It. Malcolm Tucker is an excellent example of my favorite type of character: in short, a magnificent bastard who's an expert at figuritive speedchess and whom I would never, ever wanna meet in person. It's an excellent show, though it reaffirms my conviction that politics is at best a joke and at worse toxic to society. The scripting is absolutely fantastic and apparently a good portion of it is ad libbed? I have complete admiration for the actors because they sell it. I would also like to say that I have a strange fondness for characters with unsavory traits. Smoking is a big one and so is cussing. Malcolm does the latter extremely well it's a treat to watch him deliver every line. Peter Capaldi is one of those actors who can look exactly the same between two roles and yet be completely unrecognizable (compare "Children of Earth" and this show...night and day have more similarities than those two characterizations). I am tempted to watch CoE again just to revel in how amazing his acting is.
I still need to watch most of the specials, but, the latest episode (4x07) is breaking my heart. I haven't even finished it yet (stupid slow buffering) but Glen. Ugh. And Malcolm's conversation with Ollie about how he's a husk of a man (described as only he can with fantastic imagery) and how he is going to go out with dignity and then Ollie utterly betraying him. For a political satire that has no physical danger aspect or other qualities that usually lead to heart-wrenching-ness, this is surprisingly emotionally stirring. That the writers can make such a detestable character sympathetic...
Oh, and on my last note, his relationship with his PA is one of my favorite character dynamics I've ever seen. And it's given such a small amount of screen time. See? THIS is why I love British words.
Okay, I lied. This is my last note, since I'm talking about British fiction. I made a 5 hour round trip over the course of about 14ish hours and listened to JCtN the entire way. Even though I've read the novel at least five times, there were still parts that literally made my grin. I absolutely love Howard's writing and characters. Though he's sort of fallen out of favor since he hasn't resolved that evil, evil cliffhanger in his latest book...
