Keeping my fingers on the faint, thready pulse of the Buffyverse

Jul 02, 2016 23:26

I'm sorry, this ranking of all the seasons of Buffy and Angel combined is just hot nonsense. I mean, is S1 of Angel really the third best season in the entire Buffyverse? I THINK NOT. I'm not sure I could even make an argument for it being the third best season of Angel (though I would agree that it is better than the third season of Angel). And S4 ( Read more... )

buffy, angel

I'm rewatching Angel right now, and I totally agree with your thoughts. S3 is super uneven with a bunch of eps that really don't stick for me. I'm on S5 now.

Uneven is the right word for it. There are a few really enjoyable episodes, but not enough to hold the season together.

Legit. 90% of that season is comprised of mind-numbing monster-of-the-weeks. "Knew what it wanted to be," my foot!

Carry on.

I'm fairly certain that even the people who ran S1 would agree that it did not yet know exactly what it wanted to be! (Which, as Gunn later says, is a "turgid supernatural soap opera," not that there's anything wrong with that.)

it knew what it wanted to be

a small cast wandering around sometimes running into this detective who may or may not be an important character. MISLEAD: is kate a romantic lead or an enemy? answer: neither she's irrelevant. (I joke but it's so obvious they were blindly guessing for a while)

I kind of approve of the idea that it looks for a third of a season that they thought they could build a whole show out of wesley falling down though

The sad fact is that I would probably watch and enjoy this show.

Yay for opinions!

all seasons of Buffy are better than any season of Angel

Co-signed. I never know what people mean when they state that "Angel is a better show than Buffy". In what way? Is it funnier? Does it have better female characters? I mean, there are things that I like about AtS, but I don't think it's flat out better. Whereas, I have lots of reasons for thinking that Buffy is demonstrably "better", but I realize that it just aligns with my preferences more.

I also much prefer BtVS S4 to S3. S3 would have been great without the ultra boring Angel arc, but it took up way too much screen time.

Joss doesn't always write my favorite episodes. In fact, "Amends" is my least favorite episode in all of Buffydom, and he wrote that. Pfft.

Objectively, I know that it's all just a matter of personal opinion and preferences, but...come on. Buffy is the better show.

At some point, it seems like the narrative that S3 was the pinnacle of the series seems to have been accepted as common knowledge, even though I think a lot of fans who have rewatched the series multiple times (ahem) would disagree.

Now I just did my umpteenth rewatch and I found this time around I actually like Angel better. I like the grey areas, the compromises, the choices made for the best intentions that backfire. Buffy - early Buffy - just seemed too young for me this time.

I can't really rank Buffy, but all seasons of Buffy are better than any season of Angel (#controversial statement).

I entirely agree. Even though I like AtS a lot, it can't hold a candle to BtVS. Though the characters are great and the dialogue is often brilliant, though there are some amazing, standout episodes, it's basically just another noir cop show with a maverick hero at its heart (or that's the basis of it) and those are a dime a dozen on TV.

And I agree with you about BtVS season 4. It's brilliant. To put it so low on the list is a travesty.

I think there's a reason why Buffy is still a recognizable name in mainstream pop culture, while Angel is more a cult favorite. Like you say, Buffy was simply working from a far more original premise than Angel was, and it did a lot of unexpected and interesting things with that premise.

S4 is just a tremendous amount of fun. Sure, there are weak episodes, just as there are in any season, but I have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of anyone believing that it's the worst season of BtVS.
