tuna

So, some of you may know that I have not been purchasing tuna for quite some time now. I stopped during the summer. It sometimes shows up in school lunch, etc, and in that case I end up eating it, but I don't order it in restaurants and I don't buy it in stores. I feel pretty bad for the state that tuna are in, especially because nobody wants to ( Read more... )

I've given up discussing tuna with people. I say LET THEM become extinct, because only then will people pull their heads out of their asses and maybe do something to help every other sea creature they're eating to extinction. This 'us humans first!' mentality is truly disgusting. It's no wonder I couldn't give a shit for the future of Homo Sapiens.

It's especially insane in a country like Japan. I don't understand how a country that seems to value tuna so much is willing to overfish them to death.

I feel your angst on this. I haven't touched Tuna since you told me about this in the summer. And I haven't touched Eel because it looks nasty. But anyway, I couldn't believe the stats when I read them. It just makes me feel sick. Didn't we learn our lesson with the Buffalo? Apparently not.

That's really upsetting. I didn't know about the tuna shortage until a day or two ago when my boyfriend mentioned it. I automatically felt really guilty because I'd bought two cans of tuna the day before. (on the plus side, I haven't had tuna in about half a year...)

Because of this post, I'll do my best in avoiding tuna. Even at sushi places! But, I usually go with my dad and, well...my dad is...*shakes head* he doesn't believe in global warming, so I doubt he'd stop ordering tuna just because I said they were going extinct...

People are idiots. Today they can sell tuna fish for really cheap. Tomorrow they won't be able to sell tuna fish at all. Then an entire industry will collapse. And even more sad, and entire ecosystem will collapse. I wish people could see the long term effect of these things.

I think it's sad that this kind of issue is obviously not getting enough attention by media, or else more people would know about it. If more consumers knew, they would probably not be buying tuna right now. When I told my parents last summer I was not eating fish at all for a while, and they were concerned about this because suddenly I had special dietary needs..... not concerned about fish. Bleh.

That kind of attitude pisses me off, too. Both the lack of care about the future and the lack of understanding/care about how ecosystems work. I do wonder though if some of these people don't have much of a choice - if they'll go out of business and then not be able to feed their families or something.

I didn't know there was a shortage of eel. That's good to know, because I love it, though I haven't been eating it nearly as often anyway. That is really so strange that even scientists don't know how they breed..

It might be just that one specific type of eel. I think they said this kind of eel was slightly transparent and they called them "glass eels" or something like that. I don't have the article anymore or I'd be able to check.

Hm, oh okay. I really barely eat it anymore, anyway. I almost never get sushi at our Japanese restaurant for some reason, lol.
