Dom was laughing at a joke Orlando had just told the group when his cell phone rang and he moved away from everyone else to answer the call.

He and Luke had arrived at Orlando’s place a few hours earlier for Flynn’s birthday party. Much like with Jack, Luke had built a close friendship with Orlando’s son Flynn as well and there would have been no way that they would have missed the Elf’s son’s birthday party for anything in the world.

Ever since they had spent a quiet New Year’s with some friends including Billy and his family as well as Viggo and Jason, Luke had been excited about Flynn’s upcoming birthday, having picked up on it when Billy had mentioned that he had already bought a present and had been proud about having been that early and not having waited till the last minute as he usually did.

Early the next morning Luke had woken up his parents and had demanded that they started thinking about a birthday present for Flynn as well, bringing it up every day again and again even after they had already bought the Lego ship for him, simply looking forward to the party and being excited about it.

His excitement had been slightly dampened when Elijah had announced earlier that he wouldn’t join them for the party, claiming that he had had a horrible night and felt rather worse for wear and just wanted to sleep for a bit, also telling Dom that his back hurt and he just wanted to lie down and rest instead of sitting all afternoon being surrounded by excited kids, not wanting to dampen everyone’s moods just because he was tired and moody. At first Dom had tried to get him to still come along, but in the end he had known that Elijah was right and that Elijah knew best what would be right for him and if Elijah wanted to rest for a bit, Dom would let him.

They were still about a week and a half away from their due date and Dom knew that the last few days had been rather hard on Elijah and that Elijah was counting the days till it was all over and the baby was finally there and if being alone and resting for a bit was what he needed, Dom was only too willing to give him that and went to the party with Luke. Everyone had understood about Elijah’s absence and had agreed that it was best for him to just lie down and rest in this state of his pregnancy and was asking question after question about what had happened or changed since they had last met. So Dom dutifully answered all their questions, being the proud father to be that he was and it had turned into a very pleasant afternoon even though Elijah wasn’t with them.

Dom saw on the display of his phone that Elijah was calling and he wondered if everything was okay. Elijah had wanted to sleep and now he was calling. He had probably woken up and was bored now because they weren’t back yet, probably wanting to know when they would be back or telling Dom to pick up some tuna and jelly on the way. Dom chuckled at that and picked up the call.

”Hey baby, do you need more tuna and jelly?” Dom greeted Elijah, expecting him to joke right back, but what he heard worried him.

”Dom?”

He heard Elijah’s breathing and immediately knew by the pained sound of it that something was wrong. “Baby? Is everything okay?”

“I think the baby’s coming, Dom…,” Elijah just said before his breath caught and he stopped talking.

Dom just stared ahead, trying to digest what he had just been told, turning slightly pale. “What? Now?” Was all he got out.

”I think so,” Elijah pressed out. “God, it fucking hurts, Dom.”

“Okay, okay,” Dom said, trying to calm himself down and trying to make sensible decisions.

“Contractions,” he muttered as if he had just realised something before he talked louder again. “How far apart are the contractions, baby? Can you tell me?”

”About eight minutes, I think…,” Elijah answered, his breathing having calmed down a bit.

“When did they start?” Dom asked next, trying to think back to what he had learned in that birth preparation class and what he knew from his own contractions, trying to gauge how much time was still left.

”I don’t know…I’ve been feeling weird all day, but I thought it was because of the baby kicking, but it really started when I woke up an hour ago.”

”Okay…okay…where are you now?”

”In bed,” Elijah replied and Dom didn’t miss the scared tone in Elijah’s voice, knowing that he had to be beyond scared because of being on his own right now. Dom immediately remembered how they had talked about giving birth before and how Dom had asked Elijah if he was scared about it, but Elijah had only replied that it would all be okay as long as Dom was by his side and now Dom wasn’t. Dom cursed himself for having gone to the birthday party, for not having realised that maybe it would have been a good idea to stay at home if Elijah was feeling bad, but it was too late for that now.

“Okay, baby. I’m going to come back right away and I am going to take you to the hospital. Don’t move until I am there, you hear me? I’ll be with you in twenty minutes at the most and if it gets worse, call an ambulance, okay?”

”Okay,” Elijah whispered into the phone and Dom thought he could hear tears in his voice.

“It’s going to be okay, baby. I promise!”

”Okay…”

”I love you!”

”I love you, too.”

”Okay, better get going now,” Dom said before he ended the call, slipping his phone back into his pocket and returning back to the group, his hand going through his hair in a mixture of worry, anger at himself for not being with Elijah right now and frustration at not being able to do anything.

Everyone immediately realised that something was off by the look on Dom’s face and Billy was the first one to voice the question. “What’s going on, Dom?”

”Lighe…the baby…it’s coming…”

”Now?” Billy asked and he just saw Dom nod in return.

“Where is he?”

”At home…I need to get home,” Dom said before moving towards the door, not reacting to anything any of the others said to him, being on auto pilot by now.

He felt someone pull him back and hold his hand and glared when he turned around to see it was Billy holding him back. “I need to get home.”

”Yes, you do. But you’re not going to drive. Jesus, Dom. Just look at you! You’re only going to crash the car in this state. I am going to drive!” Billy just stated and Dom knew the look on Billy’s face. It was one that bore no contradiction and if Dom was honest with himself, he was secretly glad for Billy offering, knowing that he was in no state to drive back home while he was worrying about Elijah the whole time.

Dom nodded and then once again moved towards the door when he felt that Billy still hadn’t let go. “What?” He asked angrily, thinking that everything had been sorted and they would be ready to go.

”Luke,” Billy just said, nodding towards the hallway where happy laughter from the boys could be heard. “You need to tell him that you’re leaving. You can’t just leave like this.”

”Right,” Dom agreed after a short moment, knowing that Billy was right. Luke would be scared and confused if he left in this hurry and he needed to know that Dom was leaving and most importantly why. And then something else came to Dom’s attention. “I have to call Hannah.”

“I can call her,” Billy offered, thinking that Dom was just concerned about Elijah’s family finding out that the baby was on its way.

”No, I mean…we talked about it. She’s supposed to take care of Luke while we’re at the hospital,” Dom told Billy after he had taken a deep breath and Billy just nodded.

“Okay. I’ll call her while you talk to Luke and I am sure she can pick him up here. Orli won’t mind watching him. Will you?” Billy asked, looking at Orlando who immediately nodded.

”Of course not. Don’t worry. And if Hannah is busy or something, he can stay here, Dom. Don’t worry about him. We’ll take care of Luke,” Orlando immediately promised and Dom nodded gratefully.

”Thanks, mate.”

He then left the group and looked for Luke who was busily playing with Flynn, Jack and some other boys. Dom walked over to him and knelt down next to him, Luke immediately looking up at him and smiling.

”I won, daddy! I beat Flynn,” he proudly announced to his father who smiled.

”That’s great, honey! Look…I have to leave now with Uncle Billy. Papa just called and we need to go to the hospital. The baby will be here soon.”

Luke’s eyes widened at that and at the mention of a hospital he also got scared. “Hospital?”

”Just to help us with the baby. Don’t worry, honey, Papa is alright and doing just fine. But I have to leave now to help him as well and when you come over with Auntie Hannah, you can see your new brother or sister. Would you like that?”

”When can I see it?” Luke asked curiously.

“I don’t know, honey, but I am sure tomorrow at the latest. Will you stay here for a bit longer and play with Jack and Flynn while I go to help Papa? Auntie Hannah will come and pick you up later and I am sure she’ll give you some ice-cream when you get home,” Dom went on, looking at his son and smiling at him, hardly able to grasp that soon there would be a little brother or sister for him.

“Okay, Daddy,” Luke replied, nodding.

“Alright. I love you, honey! And see you later, okay?” Dom left a kiss on his son’s mouth and hugged him once before making sure that he was going back to his game and wouldn’t be too scared or concerned by Dom leaving. But soon enough Jack and Flynn had grabbed his attention again and Luke was laughing and smiling once more.

Dom looked at him one last time before turning around and heading for the door where Billy already waited for him, still talking to Hannah on the phone.

”Yeah, okay. See you later then,” he finished his call and turned to Dom and Orlando.

”Hannah will be over in about an hour and will take care of Luke then,” he informed them and both men nodded at him.

Orlando then engulfed Dom in a tight hug. “Good luck, man! And call us when you know more.”

Dom hugged him back and nodded before he pulled back and headed for the car, getting in on the passenger’s side, while Billy took the driver’s seat and started the car immediately.

Once they were on their way, Dom got out his cell phone and dialled Elijah’s number, wanting to check that he was okay. He sighed in relief when Elijah picked up and talked to him.

“Hey baby, we’re on our way…,” Dom started, but was immediately interrupted.

”We?”

”Billy’s driving me. He said I’d only get in an accident if I was driving myself,” Dom answered slightly embarrassed, but he felt relief when he heard Elijah chuckle at that.

”Don’t tell me you’re a mess now? You were all calm when Luke was born and it’s not even you now. Don’t go all nervous on my ass now.”

”I’ll try not to, I promise. Are you doing okay?”

”Yeah, I think…I started taking the time between contractions and it’s down to six minutes,” Elijah said, sounding slightly nervous. “And you never told me it hurt that much.”

”Didn’t want to scare you, baby. Just give us another ten minutes and we’ll be there, okay?” Dom urged for Billy to drive faster and Billy getting the hint immediately did once they hit the freeway.

”Okay…,” Elijah just replied and Dom could hear that the tone of his voice was off somehow.

“Are you alright, Lighe?” Dom asked in worry and concern and when Elijah replied his voice was very low, almost a whisper.

“I am scared, Dom…so fucking scared…what if something will go wrong?”

“Hey, it won’t…everything will be alright and you and the baby will be just fine. I promise, baby!”

“Don’t make promises you can’t keep,” Elijah whispered before his breathing got stuck once more and he obviously went through another contraction.

Dom could hear Elijah trying to breathe through it as he had learned in his birth preparation class and Dom quietly talked him through it.

“Breathe easy, love. Yeah, that’s it…that’s alright…you’re doing great, Lighe. So fucking great!”

Once the contraction was over, Dom could hear Elijah trying to get his breath back and trying to find his voice. “Geez…”

“You’re doing great, Lighe. Really great!”

”You don’t know that,” Elijah just replied into the phone, still sounding slightly out of breath.

Dom chuckled at that and agreed. “Alright, but I can hear that it sounds kinda okay.”

Dom could hear movement on the other end of the line and he wondered if Elijah was trying to get into a more comfortable position on the bed. Once the movement stopped, Elijah spoke again. “Tell me about the party, Dom…”

Dom knew that Elijah wanted Dom to distract him from the pain and the contractions and Dom was only too happy to do so. For the rest of the drive to their house, he told Elijah about every last detail of the party, told him about all the presents Flynn had got and told him about how much the boy had liked their present, he told him about the joke Orlando had just told everyone when Elijah had called, he also told him about Luke playing happily with Jack and Flynn right that moment and that Hannah would pick him up at Orlando’s place, he told him about the cake and the decoration, talking Elijah through two more contractions until they finally pulled up in the drive of their house and Dom jumped out of the car before Billy had even had a chance to turn off the engine. He ran towards the house while telling Elijah that they were there.

When Dom opened the front door, he hung up the phone and rushed up the stairs to their bedroom, where he knew he’d find Elijah waiting.

”I am here, baby,” Dom announced as he rushed into the room, immediately taking Elijah’s hand, who was lying on his side on the bed, his face red as sweat ran down his forehead.

“It was about time,” he gritted out, obviously going through another contraction and Dom kept holding his hand, ignoring the pain as Elijah squeezed way too tightly in his own pain, gently wiping away a strand of hair from Elijah’s forehead with his other hand before leaning down and kissing it, whispering into Elijah’s ear.

“You’re doing great, baby. So fucking great! I am so in awe right now…”

Once the contraction was over, Dom helped Elijah sit up and helped him move towards the door, picking up a bag they had already packed a couple of days ago on the way and leading him towards the car where Billy was still waiting, ready to go off again right the moment Dom and Elijah had gotten into it.

Dom helped Elijah get into the backseat of the car and climbed in next to him, holding his husband close. “Time to get you to the hospital, baby,” Dom said which was the signal for Billy to start again.

As he turned onto the street, he looked at Elijah over his shoulder and smiled. “You just had to ruin that party, didn’t you?”

“Well, I couldn’t have you celebrate without me, huh?” He smiled weakly and Billy winked at him and promised him that they would be at the hospital in no time.

Thankfully the hospital wasn’t too far away and it only took them a bit under ten minutes to get there. Once Billy stopped the car in front of the hospital entrance, he got out of the driver’s seat and immediately opened the back door, helping Elijah out of the car and together with Dom, who had gotten out of the car through the other side, he helped Elijah inside the lobby of the hospital.

It didn’t take a genius to see what was going on when the three men entered the hospital lobby, an obviously pregnant and in pain Elijah being held up by Billy and Dom and the man sitting at the information desk immediately reacted, calling for help.

It didn’t take long until a couple of nurses came towards them, one of them pushing a stretcher and Elijah was immediately helped onto the stretcher until he lay there as comfortable as he could.

He was then pushed towards an elevator and Billy squeezed Dom’s hand one last time before urging him to follow and watching after his friend as he got into the elevator with Elijah, holding his hand and talking to him as the door closed.

Billy then turned around and returned to the car, closing the doors and getting into it, before he drove it towards the parking lot and parked it there- He then returned to the hospital and was shown the way to the waiting room of the delivery room, preparing for what he knew could turn into a very long night.
