it's practically thursday again?! i totally got jipped out of a weekend by attending ECAASU. i want 48 hours of my life back!
i havent written about ECAASU yet b/c i know that it's never a good idea to post anything when you're upset. and by upset i mean PEESED. overall it was a good feeling being there, but someone's comment at the very end of the conference saturday night after suchin pak's speech practically invalidated the entire conference for me. pretty much just left me questioning how many people are there for the content of the conference instead of just being there for show.
"look at me, i attended this conference. arent i a progressive badass now, working towards APA goals?"
in addition to
"now where does that hottie go to school and can i get a phone number?"
we can talk a lot of about APA unity and working towards a greater cause in greater numbers, but how much is that lip service for ourselves when we make snide comments about Asian ethnicities other than our own AT THE CONFERENCE?! i'll bet she went home feeling good about herself, thinking that she's really hardcore by attending ECAASU. although i shouldnt judge an entire conference of people by one person's lack of respect, i cant help but wonder how many more of her were sitting in the same auditorium with me listening to suchin pak ironically talk about APA strength.
i know i shouldnt judge a book by its cover, but i havent seen so many A|X Asians together in one place since...ever. one girl was so blonde, she was the Asian version of Barbie. just ask justin--i couldnt stop looking at her like w-t-f. of course, she could have actually done more for the community than jackie has, and has more knowledge on APA history than stephen does. but it's kind of hard to balance those traits with the number of hours to put on that makeup, no? i mean, again, i just wondered how many people were there just purely to meet hot guys/girls...and maybe catch a little workshop on the side.
im not going to say that there werent some hot guys there ('cos hella yeah, there were). but it's one thing to admit you're attending a conference for that reason, and quite a different thing to pretend that your presence there will make a positive difference for the APA community in the future.
