Empty Places
The boy trudged next to the knight.
"Sabin mad at me."
"Mmm," Cyan said. "Not mad. Just...startled."
Gau said nothing.
"He is unaccustomed to people going through his hair for nits, I'm afraid."
Gau frowned. Around them, the Veldt seemed flat, dead, and infinite.
"And I am certain," Cyan continued loftily, "he has already forgotten the incident."
"Why'd go ahead, then?"
It was such a familiar, hopeless tone that Cyan laughed and reached to ruffle his boy's hair -- only to stop, mid-motion, as memory washed back through the spaces of his heart.
Gau, noticing nothing, kept frowning. "Should've taken me."
