Life is hard right now -- hard and hot and damp -- and it’s been mostly like that for me since the week of Independence Day. My temper and my energy are both short. Sometimes, when I open my email from The Writer’s Almanac, I find serendipitous connections with the events of my own life. I suppose it’s not surprising to find bits of interest that I connect with my family’s history - after all, I have over a hundred years to work with. Not long ago I noticed the colors of the autumn foliage as I was driving home from M-‘s school. Ch- was in the car with me so I asked him to quickly name all the colors he could see. “Red, brown, yellow, orange …” He stuck with the basics, occasionally elaborating with the words dark or light.
