Because they don't completely go across the road or anything...
Around here, it seems to take ages before potholes and road construction gets repaved, so it's not unusual to see people swerve around stuff in the road.
Today, however, I saw someone swerve to try and go around railroad tracks.

My boyfriend and I were trying to get a drink out of the machine while the car's oil was being changed. It was one of those vending machines where you have to press the corresponding number. The drink we wanted was number 13. We got two wrong drinks (not to mention really angry at the malfunctioning machine) before realising that insteading of trying to push the 1 and 3 buttons at the same time we could just have pushed the 13 button.
