Setting idea: a science fiction setting, an off-world colony on a planet that was mineral rich but biologically poor, and with an extremely hostile surface environment. For the first few centuries of the colony's life, it was well-supported by human society, exchanging vast mineral wealth for food and anything else they could not produce readily in the colony. However, disaster befell humanity, leaving the colony lost and isolated. Now, viable biomass has become the most important resource on the planet, whose population has fractured into a variety of feuding states. For a time, the colony had gotten on well, recycling the mass quantities of biomass available from imported foodstuffs, organic matter, and their own wastes, but some amount of viability has been lost with each cycle, to the point now that wars are being fought over it. Indeed, the only "sacred" source of biomass that has not been fought over are the dead, who belong to their own people, for each state recognizes that taking the other side's dead is a losing proposition, forcing conflict to drag on to the point of utter annihilation of one side or the other if it was to happen. Only now, even that rule of war is falling apart.
