road trip day six

Jun 09, 2010 17:59

Up again this morning to pack everything back in the car. This was less easy than normal, the kids were mucking around and then I lost my sunnies - which given the gorgeous day was a small disaster. Thankfully they were located.

Filled up in Te Awamutu and then toddled off to the Waitomo Caves. With the massive rains they've had recently (like all of New Zealand) the river was very swollen and the usual passage out was blocked, so after we'd floated around looking at glow worms we had to walk back out the top. Oddly, ElderM freaked out at that boatride in the dark, but managed to not completely panic until we were able to leave.

Lunch in Taumarunui, lots of snow on the plateau and the Desert road was closed again today, so a bit more traffic on the back road. However, no dramas on the road, and we made W(h)anganui by three. We are in a motel, pretty old but while it's not as nice as the Paihia one this is more practical, there's a kitchenette and three beds! I get my own bed for the first time this trip.

We've been to the supermarket to sort out breakfast, had a takeaway for dinner, and now we're enjoying Sky and I think I shall have a glass of wine. Tomorrow we return to home, but that's then.
