A two-and-a-half-day weekend full of Colts, gorillas, and hippos

I never really got into watching professional football on TV before, and now I realize why: I never had a good reason to root for any particular team. Now that I have HoosierBud around, it's fun to root for the Colts in the playoffs. They only made a few Bloomingdale-Bull-variety goofs, but quickly made up for them, keeping themselves in the lead the entire game. I'm glad the sports broadcasters provide those imaginary lines across the field to help you keep track of where the line of scrimmage is and how far a team needs to take the ball for another first down. Did they always do that?

Sunday Bud and I took to the icky I-5 corridor really early to avoid traffic heading to San Diego. The plan paid off and that Zoo deserves all of the accolades it has received! The landscaping is beautiful (though the confusing maps for visitors seem to fight against the landscape instead of with it...), with aviaries of exotic birds and rolling hills that must provide the animals with neat views of San Diego and the water. My favorite exhibit was the gorilla family on its big hill. Two gorilla mommies carried inquisitive hairball babies on their backs, and at times, an older brother of one of the babies picked him up and carried him around to go play with him away from the mother. Oh, and at one point we watched one of the mothers grab up her baby who had been dangerously close to disturbing an elder, and carry the baby over to what must have been "time out." In the orangatan (sp?) exhibit, a mischievous teenager-boy tried to poke the giant patriarch, who displayed his lack of amusement. I enjoyed learning about giant pandas, too (though I could have done without learning about how they mark their scent on trees). Something I almost forgot to mention was how friggin frigid the weather was all day long! We're sure the weather kept the crowds down, but it was soooooo cold anytime we found ourselves in shaded areas.

After a full day at the Zoo, we found a neat Indian restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter of downtown, avoided getting mugged on our way back to the car (I just hate the grime and crime of cities!), and arrived back in LA in time to crash. It was a perfect way to spend a day off - I was so happy to be free of my Treo the whole time, too.

Of course, today, though it is technically a holiday, I will need to do several hours of work on yet another rush matter...maybe it won't be that bad - a girl can hope!
