A short obituary in the Oregonian Bob Welch, who wrote a column about her last year, has a note near the end of this column And finally, Amelia's mom Patricia asked me to post this obituary she wrote (with help from her partner Kym and Amelia's dad Michael and a little from me).
Amelia Laine Worth died gracefully on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 due to complications of Leukemia.
Amelia was born January 10, 1984 during an intense snowstorm in Jamestown, New York. She was the daughter of Patricia Worth of Coos Bay and Michael W. Dean of Los Angeles. The summer of 1985 she moved with her mother to Portland, Oregon where she spent her early years attending "A Children's Club" preschool for three years. They moved to Bandon in July of 1989 and spent two wonderful years living close to the ocean and attending public school before moving to Coos Bay where she was in the Coos Bay public school system from second grade until graduating from Marshfield High School in 2002. She moved to Eugene in 2002 where she attended the University of Oregon until 2006.
During her middle school years she was a member of the Sea Cadets, aspiring at that time to possibly join either the Navy or Air Force after graduation.
Throughout her short stay here she was an accomplished trumpet player, starting at Milner Crest, playing with the Lab Band, Marshfield Marching and Concert bands, along with two years with the University of Oregon's Marching Ducks Band. Through playing with Oregon Coast Lab Band Amelia acquired a deep love for swing music and would lay her trumpet down every time they played "Swing, Swing, Swing," so that she could grab a dance partner and "cut a rug". She felt that this music was the happiest music ever. She delighted in participating in the Lab Band's excursion down to San Diego to play for the International Lions Club's gathering. She loved traveling to Portland to march in the Starlight Parades with the Marshfield Marching Band of Pirates. Amelia was able to travel up to Washington and down through California with the U of O Marching Band, which tickled her too!
Amelia was a second-degree black belt in TaeKwonDo here at Reiss's East/West Karate School. The last two years she was employed with East/West as an assistant instructor. Her movements were beautifully executed, along with her techniques with the bo - astounding.
She was deeply passionate with her relationships in high school: she loved coordinating activities for all of her friends to enjoy. Her dream of matching her hair to her Senior prom dress and shoes was realized, spreading a path of purple all over our community.
She took up residence in Eugene the fall of 2002 when she started classes at U/O where she had the dream of completing her PhD in Anthropology with a focus in Archeology. Even through the challenge of her health issues, she attended classes the past three years and was just a few credits away from seeing her bachelor's degree. She was inducted into the Friars at the U/O and belonged to Alpha Phi Omega where she was a Pledge Educator. She was a founding mother of the Northwest Primate Conservation Society. She was a former Deputy and Headmistress of "Castle Hogwart" LiveJournal community along with being co-moderator of the LiveJournal group, One_Happiness. Amelia touched hearts and lives worldwide through the internet community.
During the final 11 months her boyfriend Andy and Amelia travelled wide and far: Seattle on New Year's weekend; snowshoeing in the Sister's Wilderness; fishing trips with friends; and her most memorable, their 4th of July trip to Los Angeles to be with their friends, her father and his wife, Debra Jean Dean, hanging out on Manhattan Beach, paddleboating & hiking, and experiencing the "Happiest Place on Earth" - Disneyland.
Those left behind are: Andrew Case, her knight in shining armor; her kitten, Taylor, who gave her great snuggles; mother and companion, Patricia Worth and Kym Kennedy; father, Michael W. Dean; maternal grandmother, Esther Worth; paternal grandfather, Jack Dean; grandparents, Mel and Bettie Rice; Susie Barney and Sarah Bishop, beloved roommates; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins scattered around the globe.
Those who have passed on before her are: Gordon L. Worth, maternal grandfather; and Virginia Wareham Dean, paternal grandmother.
Amelia lived life passionately with a mighty zeal! Her smile preceded her in every room. She has become a bridge in her passing, uniting many hearts. Shine on!
