Characters and Letters

1. Comment on this post with I VOLUNTEER!
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Think of 5 fictional characters and post their names and your comments on these characters.

nimeth_nimora gave me the letter M. Wootsicles, here we go.

1. Mort - Short for Mortimer; he's the main character of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel Mort. I dunno if he shows up in any of the other books, as I just got into Discworld a few months ago (so I haven't read everything yet). The book itself was a fun read (duh), and I liked the character pretty well, too. Not my favorite Discworld character to date, but he's up there. It's fun to watch a kid growing into himself, even under crazy circumstances like being Death's apprentice.

2. Minerva Paradizo - one of the main antagonists in Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony. 12 years old when you meet her, she's basically an intellectual match for Artemis himself, which is something he's not really accustomed to in the human world. Artemis also finds her quite attractive. *wink wink* Now, it's been a little while since I read the books, so I don't remember much of her character, but I remember enough that I kind of root for some sort of romantic thing to develop between her and Artemis later on. Since obviously there can't be anything between him and Holly. XD But I don't think there will be, honestly. For one thing, I don't know if all the character growth and development Artemis experiences through the series will ever be matched by Minerva. For another, if Mr. Colfer doesn't wish it to happen, it won't. =P

3. Maerad - The main character of the first two books of the Pellinor series, and still a very important character in the rest of the series (just not the focus of the third, and one of the focuses of the last). She starts off as a slave girl, discovered by Cadvan, a Bard passing through. Bards, in this world, are basically magicians. She has an innate talent for it, as I believe she has Elidhu (powerful elemental spirits) blood in her lineage. She's also the center of a prophecy. Again, it's been a while since I read the books, but I liked Maerad. She goes through a lot, and I remember being able to identify with her, because she reacted to a lot of her trials and experiences the same way I would have. She's pretty awesome.

4. Professor Minerva McGonagall - Head of Gryffindor House, Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts, teaches Transfiguration. I already liked her quite a lot, especially after Order of the Phoenix (how she interacted with Umbridge and that whole situation), but now that Pottermore's open to everyone and I've gotten to read a lot of her backstory, I love her even more. She's gone through so much, but she's strong, and still likable for all that, if a tad strict-seeming. She's fun, though, when she lets it show.

5. Murtagh - son of Morzan (bad guy) and Selena in the Inheritance Cycle; elder brother of Eragon (they have the same mother). His past is very mysterious when he's first introduced, but I quickly grew to like him. I honestly feel bad for how the Varden treat him when they discover his parentage; he didn't CHOOSE to be Morzan's son, and he did run away. He proved that he wanted to help the cause of the Varden, if not necessarily because he thought Galbatorix should be overthrown, then because he just wanted somewhere to belong.
I know a lot of the characters in the books, because of the way people are in that world, hate Murtagh simply because of who he is. Once he is recaptured by Galbatorix and forced to be his champion, he has pretty much no chance of convincing people he's not all bad. He's a powerful magician, becomes a Dragon Rider, and he's a very confused young man. I was glad of how his storyline resolved itself, at least. It wasn't perfect, but I thought that if he was hated by everyone for the rest of his life, that would be so unjust. I enjoy reading about people who, against all odds, overcome what circumstances have been thrust upon them to become their own person, who can make their own choices. Murtagh is one such.
