Arkham I: 2010. The sprawling metropolis of Arkham is the largest city in the UK, riddled with violent crime, homelessness and unemployment, and falling into disrepair. It is also the only city in the world in which you can find large - and increasingly larger - concentrations of the Machina, biomechanical shapeshifters on a religious crusade to wipe out humanity.

From an abandoned watchtower in the centre of the city, former police commissioner Anya [surname] and inventor Kasumi [surname] command two armoured operatives, titled Emrys and Orion, to wipe out the Machina in response.

Shay Doyle is a street hustler and pickpocket, of no particular talent, who upon arrival on Arkham finds that he thrives in Arkham. Following the death of Anton [surname], Anya’s son and former wielder of the Emrys System, however, Shay is brought in to be its next user.

Arkham IV: 1900. There is no more prestigious career than that of a Mechanist, a scientist specialised in building Machina - complicated machines of metal and wood, powered by steam, and given sentient thought through the usage of alchemical secrets.

Arkham is the gathering place for Mechanists, and thus, the capital city of the Imperium Britannia, and the home of Empress Victoria, herself a Machina (a monarch of flesh, it was decided, was prone to the weaknesses of flesh, and unfit to rule). Mechanists are rarely without ulterior motives, though, and rarely without grand schemes to seize power for themselves.

Catherine Johnson, a woman from one of the far-flung colonies of the Imperium, aspires to be a Mechanist. Informed that, due to her social class and gender, she is forbidden from building Machina, she sets out to instead build a suit of armour, superior to any Machina.
