More Politics, American Idol

More HuffPost political stuff - some wanky, some not.

Apparently a whole lot of people are not terribly happy with MoveOn.org

It's been a long, long time since Texas mattered in the presidential primaries. This is the first time in decades that we've actually had TV ads running. It's kinda fun. James Moore does a superb job of analyzing Texas presidential primary politics

And here’s some funny that mocks pretty much everyone.

I missed the first 20 minutes or so, and didn’t watch the auditions at all, so not only are most of these people new to me, but it is also possibly that I’m confused about who is who. And only a few of my opinions of them are strong ones so far. For the most part it was all a blur.

D joined me about 10 minutes after I started watching. He came in just to curl up on the bed with me. When he figured out what we were watching, I got the most hateful look from him! He was all, "Oh, no no no no, not this awful show! I hate this show!" But D strongly prefers classical music and melodic light jazz and pop. He was terribly dismayed that there was a lot more faux rock this time around. But not dismayed enough to leave the warm bed.

I do not care for the new format. I thought I would like the new policy allowing the contestants to use instruments, but since they’ve done away with the group sings, and given a bunch of favorites and ringers a pass to the final 50, I wasn’t happy.

By the way, if you’re voting and you care, there are at least three Pampered Pet ringers in this year’s competition. I generally want those people kicked out of the competition fast. And after last year’s awful fiasco I feel even more strongly that way in the case of female competitors. But I’m human, so one of them, Michael Johns (the cute Australian guy who can actually sing) doesn’t bother me all that much. As for the female Chose Ones, well ... I’ll get to her later.

Thus far the ones I like the most are generally the ones I’ve seen the least (with one or possibly two glaring exceptions). I’m okay with the afore-mentioned Michael Johns, and I don’t hate the girl who was sick and losing her voice either. And after I finally figured out who she is, I decided I don’t particularly mind Brooke White. I’d much rather have a guy win than either of those two and they were the only two women I could even stand. They got a really bad crop of female contestants this year. I must qualify that statement by admitting there are some female contestants I haven’t really seen yet. I might change my mind after the top 24 perform.

The two female frontrunners appear to be Amanda the Faux Rocker and Carly the Irish Ringer. I took an immediate dislike to both of them.

Amanda’s voice is horrible. Her singing style is completely affected and there’s no natural “rock” in her at all. She sounds like a bad Janis Joplin tribute artist. And of course, D utterly detests her. He always hates the faux rock kids that pop up on Idol and even though I liked Gina well enough last year, I’m beginning to agree with him.

Carly the Irish Ringer is already a (un)successful recording artist who has had an album produced to the tune of $2,000,000.00 but I’m hearing it only sold 400 copies. Hee! Considering how badly she sang, I’m not surprised. Also, she’s ruined her body. Yuck. Ewwww. I will do almost anything to get her the heck of my TV screen.

The I thought the Crybaby Boy who lived in his car was kind of cute and interesting until the crying started. Now I just want him gone. Maybe he can go hang out with Project Runway’s Ricky and they can try to turn crying into performance art.

Also in the unlikeable category for the guys, there was apparently an unwashed homeless street person lurking around during Hollywood Week. Actually there may have been two, but only one of them sang, I think. I’m just not sure. Several posters on TWOP commented about one of them singing and apparently he is a frontrunner, but I’m not sure if he is the same as the guy who thinks Simon is jealous of his nasty, filthy, stringy, disgusting, long hair. At any rate, while I support programs that help the homeless and unwashed, I do not believe American Idol counts as one of those programs. Surely we can find a better way to get these people back on their feet!

I like David Archuleta, but I have some reservations. First, I dread having to listen to Randy Jackson go on and on and on about how he’s ONLY SIXTEEN!!!!!. Second, I still believe minors should not be allowed in this competition. Actually, after listening to him sing I feel that even more strongly. He has some of the same vocal problems Ms. Sparks has and a lot of them come from not having fully matured and trained vocal cords. I’m not just grousing because it makes them sing less spectacularly; it’s more that I hate watching kids ruin their voices and I especially hate competitions that encourage kids to ruin their voices. These kids need to develop their instruments at a natural rate and not be forced into over-using and over-stretching themselves. And that’s just the physical instrument. I also believe their not emotionally prepared for a musical career at sixteen.

Kyle the Politician is fun to watch for the early rounds but I hope he doesn’t become the new Sanjaya.

Last season at this point I was barely aware of the frontrunners. I hope that is also the case this season.

And tonight should be kind of fun.
