Journals and Such

The Short Version

LJ’s new policy doesn’t really affect my journal entries much. My posts about RL and reality TV and kitty and garden pictures aren’t what they’re looking to TOS. I don’t really write fic anymore, but none of mine involved anyone underage, anyway and I’m more into het and gen these days than slash. On the other hand, I do understand they’ve made an awful lot of people who aren’t doing anything wrong feel unwelcome and I do think their customer service has been pretty awful lately.

I’m still here, however, because I like the features and I want to keep up with y’all.

My backup journal is Journalfen, just as it has been since March of 2003. I’ve always posted there off and on, and will continue to post there as well as here. Sometimes I cross-post. Sometimes I post different entries to JF and LJ. I’ve been trying to friend most of you over at JF, if I can find you, though I know a lot of you only have accounts there to read comms.

Longer Version Mostly About Other Journaling Sites
I do have journals at Greatestjournal, Deadjournal, Blurty, and Insane Journal. I haven’t been using them and don’t really pull them up to read my f-list there. If you’ve moved to any of those completely, well, I’ll miss you and I wish you well. It’s not that I’m against them (except kind of IJ, which I’ll explain later), I just don’t think they’re as good as either JF or LJ, and like most of us, between keeping up with job, family, home, etc., I don’t really have time to continuously watch 6 different f-lists. I think there are some services that compile and/or aggregate journals and I may look into those so I can keep up with those of you who are leaving. But most of my f-list isn’t, and neither am I.

As far as the other services:

Deadjournal’s a little too emo-goth-punk for me, and I haven’t used it in many years.

Greatestjournal doesn’t work for me for technical reasons, since I (or we?? I can’t figure this out!) am only able to read one page of my friends there, so I would have to sit in front of my computer 24/7 constantly refreshing my friends page for it to be of any use to me. I can’t really understand why anyone is using it for anything other than icon storage because of this, and it makes me sad because I think there are some fun RPGs over there.

Insane Journal has some nice bells and whistles because it uses more recent code, and I know several of you have migrated there and even purchased permanent accounts. I’m not joining you because I already have a premium permanent account at Journalfen, and because I really do not like the way it is set up. Part of that is aesthetic. The first time I pulled up the site I almost had a seizure. The color scheme is hideous. I also don’t care for the theme of the place. I’m not having fits over them mocking the mentally ill, as I get that it is tongue in cheek and all. However, having been raised by a psychotic person, I tend to shy away from places that call themselves asylums. I think I am subconsciously concerned that I’ll run into my mother over there or something. So, even though I am holding an account over there, I have no intention of ever using it for anything other than name holding.

And Blurty ... eh, who cares about Blurty? Is it even still there?

My biggest problem with LJ is not that they want to control what content they host on their site. I think that they have the same right every other business has to do just that. I'm more bugged by the site freezing up my computer everytime I open a post with more than about 40 comments and by their poorly handled customer service during the recent events.

There is one thing I find kind of funny about last night’s clarification. Apparently there are fandom people on the review panel who are deciding whether or not our fic and art are acceptable. I can see all kinds of possibilities for grudge TOSing in that, especially when the reporting button becomes available.
