I've always been a person that likes having heroes, that takes inspiration from others. Some are real, such as say, John Adams, Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter; and some are fictional Robin Hood, Captain Kirk. I've got for the little guy made good. But most of all, I think was Luke Skywalker.
Luke was never perfect and often fell flat on his face; but he got up again and made it work. Luke was literally straight off the farm, with a belief in the basic goodness of people, he helped to fight a brutal war and by necessity became stronger and smarter, but not cruel. (Fiction's latest equivalent might be John Crichton of Farscape, though Crichton found himself in far more desperate situations.) Luke managed to grow, to encompass more, to learn how to fight, but more important know when to stop fighting and turn to your enemy and say, "There's a better way".
But how big a geek do I have to be, that when I read a Star Wars fanfiction that has Luke become an emotional basketcase, an idiot that fails at everything because his father says mean things to him, I actually become sad. When you point out to the authors they've spent twenty-one chapters making a strong character a spineless idiot who literally crawls in the dust to people that have no respect and no love for him; the authors say don't worry we'll fix it in the last chapter! Luke and Daddy will make up and they'll be a happy family.
Why would a character the film shows as capable of growth and incredible emotional strength in desperate times fall apart because his father and sister are mean to him? Well, because he never dealt with Daddy cutting off his hand. Why could he deal with so much but not that? Well, because he couldn't. Why would he want to make up with a father that neither loves or respects him and under every condition takes every chance to undercut Luke in his chosen work? Well, because everytime his father was telling Luke he was uneducated, weak, and not worthy of his name it was because Vader really loved him. That Vader humiliated Luke in front of his students was his way of helping Luke a better teacher.
Oh, I did I mention that Leia gave up the rebellion and joined Daddy in the Empire, changing her name to Vader? And she and Han joined in the general beating up and degrading of Luke? My butt-kicking Leia? Gleefully suppressing journalists, making up the laws, and vaguely saying someday, maybe we'll give the masses a little freedom. And Han, he who shot first, now is Lord Solo that leads the navy that goes around shooting the rebels.
But yet, the authors assure me they love Luke, and Leia, and Han. And they'll make it all better in the last chapter.
Maybe it is simply time to give up fanfic. Because this makes me so sad.
And did I mention it was on Luke & Vader group fanfic group? Just makes the cut deeper.
