Miranda's First Month

Aug 07, 2010 14:05

Yesterday marked Miranda's first month as a whole, if tiny, human person. Our sleep schedule is still a bit of a disaster, and we've had to blow off a few plans, but on the whole, things seem to be going well. Ray has been on leave from work for the past two weeks, which has been wonderful -- not only because a second set of hands has made things like feeding and bathing myself a lot easier, but because the three of us ... or really the five of us, counting Ollie and Morgan, have had time to spend together while we're transitioning. It helps to have some bonding time.

Another thing that has been nice is the First Weeks group at Birth and Beyond. It's nice to talk to other people in the same situation, and to put my difficulties into perspective. It was there that I learned about the "Mom's Day" Thursdays at the theater in Bellevue. Every Thursday, this movie theater offer three movies -- good current run stuff, not kids movies -- specifically for parents with little babies. They lower the sound a little, serve concessions to your seat, and let you bring in strollers. They fill up their theaters at 10am on a Thursday and moms don't have to miss out on movies cause their kid gets fussy. I love it! We've gone to see Inception, which I LOVED, and Salt, which was just fine for a summer action flick.

We took Miranda on her first trip to the zoo on Wednesday. She ate a little while we sat on a bench, then slept the rest of the time in the moby wrap, but we had fun and bought her a stuffed Asian elephant. The elephant is her standardized comparison critter ... we got the idea from a friend to take a picture of our girl each month on her birthday with the same stuffed animal. It will make a cute, informal growth record. I'll post the picture soon, I promise.

Miranda hasn't really settled into any recognizable routines yet, but she has been making some changes. She has been doing a little better about sleep in her crib or her bassinet, though she still sleeps best in contact with me. She has also been spending more and more time over the past week or so awake, but not crying or eating. She's actually started looking around at the world, which is so exciting because it indicates a time when she'll want to play, and talk and learn things beyond basic functions. She's also starting to smile a little. It may not be a real smile yet, but it's looking more and more like a real smile.
