First Two Weeks

Miranda is two weeks old today, and things are going well. I have to admit that, by the end of the first week, I was feeling really, really lousy. Days 4 and 5 were hard, and by day 6, I was doing a lot of crying, wondering what I had gotten myself into, trapped, exhausted, and very hormonal. Thankfully, that was the worst of it. Since Miranda reached 1 week old, things have been going a lot better. I know, I know, one week doesn't seem like much ... but it was one of the longest weeks of my life.

What changed? A few things. One, I guess the quality of food has gotten a lot better, so Miranda can get full after she has eaten. Two, I gave up on the whole idea of getting out of bed and going to the rocker/recliner to feed, then put her back in her cosleeper every time she wanted to eat. Instead, when she's hungry, I'm just bringing her into bed with me and barely waking up. Fortunately Ollie and Morgan have responded really well, not trying to crowd us or reclaim my attention. Ollie has actually been very protective, rather than jealous as I had feared, of Miranda. Third, I have started feeling a lot healthier and can do a lot more. I hadn't expected to feel quite so run down and sore as I did that first week. I wanted to be out doing things with my family, but just got tired so easily. Week two has been a lot better because I've been able to get out and do some things. I've been able to go to lunch, walk Ollie, and we even took Miranda to her first bar. (The Madrona Ale House has great food, an excellent beer selection, and live music, but it also a play area and toys, so it was a good first bar.) Fourth, friends stopping by have made me feel a lot less isolated or boring. It has been wonderful to see you guys!

A few changes I've noticed in the past two weeks: Miranda lost her umbilical stump on Saturday, July 17. She's been focusing her eyes, and occasionally laying quietly, awake and looking at things. She even slept for five straight hours one night. More than just about anything, she loves being in her moby wrap, warm and swaddled against me. Her little eyes are amazing and she is really delightful. I hope the next week is even better.
