Elenion is my character in the game. Irah is owned by lmpandora, who invited me to the game.

Raid: Great Salt Lake

Elenion gritted his teeth and glanced to where his staff was, several feet away from him. The tiny slime had caught him by surprise and knocked away his weapon. He would’ve engaged the monster with his bare hands but this was a slime. He might as well stick his hand into mud.

The slime approached and he readied himself to dodge at the last moment-

-suddenly, an arrow pierced into the monster’s side. The slime howled, hurt, but still alive. The arrow was being pushed out slowly out of its body.

He watched in morbid fascination. That looked disgusting.

“Are you an idiot?”

He turned abruptly to see his faceless female (temporary) companion, Irah, taking out an arrow. It looked like the same kind that hit the slime. She released the arrow to hit another monster.

“You’re a mage, aren’t you? Use a spell, you fool,” she continued, not even bothering to spare him a glance.

The command brought him out of his stupor. He frowned. He looked back at the slime. Seeing it distracted, he dashed for his staff. He was relieved when he finally picked it up.

Unfortunately, his movement brought the slime’s attention back at him. He glared at the monster and firmly gripped his staff in one hand. When it was about to pounce on him, he brought his weapon down on its head then hit it again in a horizontal slashing motion, targeting its eyes. Finally, he pierced through it with the butt end of his staff, making sure to hit it where its heart was supposed to be (or where he hoped it was).

Thankfully, his efforts weren’t futile. Already weakened, the monster collapsed into a pile of goo. He stepped back to avoid coming in contact with it and sighed. He thought he was going to die for a moment. To a tiny slime, of all things.

He brought up his staff to inspect it. It had slime on certain places. His face scrunched up in disgust.  He pulled out a rag and began wiping it.

“Congratulations.”

The clearly sarcastic tone reminded him of the woman who helped him. Looking back, he saw her approach, her arms crossed over her chest. He straightened and resisted the urge to sigh. It was just another person insulting him. That wasn’t anything new.

He bowed to her saying, “Thank you,” pertaining to her earlier assistance. “I appreciate your help, miss. Is there any way I can repay you?”

If her features were visible, he’d probably see a sneer directed at him.

“Stop being a weakling,” she replied with a scoff. “A mage who refuses to use spells is useless.”

He frowned and turned back to the dead slime. When he was done looting the monster and wiping off the additional slime on his hands, he spoke again.

“I can’t.”

She turned back to him from her own looting. “What do you mean you can’t?”

He sighed. “I can’t use spells.” He stood up and pocketed his money and a pair of gauntlets.

She stared at him, giving an air of incredulity. “What sort of mage can’t use spells?”

He shrugged. He’d been asked that numerous times before but he didn’t have an answer to it, until now.

She huffed. “You’re a really useless elf then. If I’d have known, I wouldn’t have agreed to going on a raid with you.”

“I apologize for the inconvenience I’ve caused,” he said calmly, ignoring the insult.

She was silent, probably contemplating whether or not she was going to put an arrow through his head.

“Whatever,” she finally said, turning away from him. “Don’t expect me to go with you again. I hate associating with weak mages.”

His elongated ears twitched but his expression remained blank. “Mages aren’t weak.”

She tilted her head towards him, seemingly scrutinizing him. “I’ve never met a strong mage. You certainly aren’t.”

His grip on his staff tightened. “I’ll become stronger. Much stronger than you.”

“Heh. I’d like to see you try.”
