Sometime during Dummy’s birthday and “coming of age” party, the whole team agreed that they needed to spend more time with the clever robot.
Tony had been reluctant at first but, after a few more convincing arguments and a couple of shots of Natasha’s special drink, he admitted that Dummy could probably profit from learning from other people.
So, the team set up a schedule for when Dummy would time with them.
They all decided that the first person to “borrow” the AI was Bruce. It would have been Steve but, since he already spent so much time in Tony’s workshop with Dummy (“And Tony,” Clint pointed out), there wouldn’t be much that Steve could teach him on short notice. Besides, Bruce needed a lab assistant for the day.
Of course, the spectacled scientist refrained from letting Dummy touch anything that could explode or react with the materials that made up the robot’s body.
It hadn’t really been that much different from being Tony’s lab assistant, but Bruce swore that, after teaching Dummy the proper handling of glassware and equipment, the AI hadn’t broken anything at all. JARVIS also attested to this.
Overall, Bruce and, in turn, Tony had been happy with the result (the two of them obviously saw it as another experiment as they discussed Dummy’s behavior in different circumstances).
The next day was Clint’s turn. Tony prohibited him from letting Dummy touch any weapons but that hadn’t stopped the archer from having him learn how to use a toy bow and suction cap ended arrow.
Natasha didn’t share what they did but Steve noticed that Dummy seemed to move a bit quietly after that day.
Tony wouldn’t let Thor have Dummy unless Dr. Jane Foster was supervising, so Dummy learned how to set up a telescope.
This continued for about two weeks. And, whenever Dummy would be with someone else, Steve thought to keep Tony company. He somehow ended up being a substitute lab assistant too.
“Screwdriver,” Tony called from under the new casing he was constructing for the arc reactor powering the Tower. Steve placed the requested item on the floor beside Tony, having already learned of the genius’ abhorrence to having things handed to him. Tony picked it up but set it down just as quickly. “I need the smallest one-I can’t use that for this section.”
After Steve provided the correct tool and Tony finished using it, Tony spoke, his voice muffled slightly, “Drill, .4 cm tip.”
Steve stared at the said drill that currently had a tip that was about five times the size Tony was asking for. The blond had no idea how to replace that.
Apparently, he had stared too long, because Tony already moved from under the casing and blinked at him incredulously.
“If you didn’t know how to switch tips, you should’ve just said so.” Tony proceeded to deftly remove the tip. “Even Dummy knows this…”
Steve couldn’t help but feel a bit hurt at that. How was he supposed to know that?
But then, he saw Tony glancing at a familiar fire extinguisher and scowling before looking back at the drill-and Steve understood: Tony missed Dummy. Terribly.
He couldn’t mention it though, as Tony shoved the drill and the small tip into his hands. “You should at least learn this if you’re gonna be a good lab assistant.” The genius steadied his hands as he fumbled at the sudden touch. “God, you’re worse than Dummy,” he added with a roll of his eyes.
