April 17, 1852 was the happiest day of Mai’s life.  She wore the prettiest white dress on her wedding day that every girl dreamed of. Walking down the white isle with her father to the love of her life. Mai smiled seeing her beloved Shoryu standing there. His wife-to-be walking down the aisle, as time seemed never ending. Oh how entranced Shoryu was at the sight of her. She reached the altar and her hand was given to Shoryu as they stood before the priest in the church where their marriage would be witnessed and blessed by God. “I love you” Shoryu mouthed.

Mai smiled. Some how she couldn’t do the same back. She didn’t know if it was because she was too happy to say anything at all. In the dark corner of the church behind Shoryu a man looking dazed came out with gun aiming at him. As the crowd made noise she quickly pulled him behind her. A gunshot went off as the guest screamed and crouched. Shoryu who’s back was to Mai looked behind him and saw the man in front of Mai with the sizzling gun.

He had saw a different man behind Mai and rushed to protect her. He didn’t realize there was another man behind him.  The two men ran while Shoryu cradled Mai in her arms. Her dark blood stained the beautiful white dress. Her veil still on her face. He put pressure on her gun wound crying. “Please don't die Mai” he said sobbing.

Mai’s vision was faint; her breathing shallow. “I’m so sorry…” she replied to him. Shoryu shook his head and took out the ring sliding it on her finger. “you’ll be okay sweetie. Just hang in there.” He looked out at the church. Everyone has calmed down. They also had caught the two perpetrators.  “why did you do this!” he said loudly crying still. “Just why?”

The two men who were dazed came to and suddenly looked confused. The first man saw the dying bride in the groom’s arm. He became terrified. Shoryu asked again. “Why did you kill my wife? Why?!” The man shook his head. “i…I don’t know! For one moment I was in my barn feeding the cows and then I was here...” he looked around and behind him and saw a man. The first man’s eyes widened and pointed to the one who was standing at the entrance of the door shocked.

“IT WAS HIM! HE MADE ME DO IT!”  The 2nd man agreed in his defense as well. The man at the door was confused but brushed it off. He quickly rushed to the altar. “Mai….MAI oh God please stay alive!” He tried to touch her but Shoryu pushed him away. “Arrest him! Don’t let him near her! Arrest and execute him!”

Police came and grabbed the man to join the other two. “Wait! It wasn’t me! IT WASN'T ME! Please, I would never kill Mai!” He tried struggling to free himself. “MAI! IT’S ME MAKOTO!” he continued screaming at the top of his lungs as he was dragged away. It was no use.

The medics were taking a while to get here. Shoryu held her as Mai whispered Makoto’s name.  A tear came down her face and her vision darkened. She then was thrown in darkness hearing Shoryu calling her name in the distance. It was cold where she was. It was dark with no light.

She walked a few steps and then sat down in her wedding dress with her knees to her chest just waiting as if she has done it before. As if she knew what was coming to get her but didn’t know what or who. She didn’t know who she was or why she was wearing a wedding dress.

Familiar words rang in her ears instilling fear. She didn’t know what they meant, but it was terrifying. Mai started shaking uncontrollably covering her ears in attempt to block out those words.  “Stop…” she said crying. “PLEASE STOP THIS!” Burying her head in her knees the voices suddenly stopped and felt a warm light.

She looked up and saw an man in a white robe giving her a hand. She looked the hand given to her reluctantly but took it anyways. It made her feel safe. She couldn’t see his face and she couldn’t remember why she was there. “Where are we going? “ she asked him comfortably as they started walking. He didn’t answer her until a while later.

“I’m sorry…” he said to her. “eh? Sorry for what?” she asked back. She could sense the sorrow in those two words. He didn’t say for what, but instead apologized again. “I’m so sorry…” Suddenly, the space between them grew apart and their hands were no longer entwined.  “Wait!” she said reaching out for him. She didn’t know why, but she didn't’ want to let him go.  She then fell. She didn’t know how long it was, but she soon lost consciousness.
