Americorps NC^3

Mar 24, 2007 16:28

So I got a packet from AmeriCorps *National Civilian Community Corps (henceforth referred to as NC^3) and as I was reading it, I was expecting to be scared and to know for sure that that wasn't something I wanted to do. So I'm really surprised that the more I read, the more interesting it got. Okay, Americorps NC^3 is somewhat military-y. Which sounds scary, but it's not that hard-core. There are three sites for the fall cycle, one in Charleston, SC, one in Sacremento, CA, and one in Washington DC. Here are some snippets from the packet:

"teams participate in community service projects that respond to the most pressing needs in the areas of environment, education, public safety/homeland security, unmet needs, and disaster relief" --not scary at all.
"Members share living space with other members at the campus and with up to 8-12 other people when working on projects away from campus." --okay, I can handle that, no problem.
"Members will experience a lack of privacy because the team eats, lives, serves, and travels together." --okay, I might have to take some walks to keep from going insane, but I think I can handle that for 10 months.
"Members may have to compromise on menu selection to stay within a limited team budget" --thankfully I've gotten much less picky.
"the NC^3 program is a rigorous experience. Members are requried to particpate fully and be capable of:
~deploying to any location in the US and be flexible and adaptable to auddent and unexpected changes (sounds awesome)
~living in a communal setting, sharing a living space. this may include camping or sleeping on the florr and sharing one bathroom with the entire team for the length of the project. (alright, i could possibly handle that)
~...limited resources and technology (lack of phones, cell phone usage, computers, etc)" ----AHHHHHHHHHHH, now that is scary

there's more, but I have to go to the movies, so I'll update more later. Let me know what you think. Maybe you should talk some sense into me, because for some reason, this program doesn't sound too bad (except for the phones and computer thing) --though don't worry, there's a computer lab on every campus, so I would be able to update every once in a while.

Feedback, por favor.

Update:
I just spent like 20 minutes adding more to this, and then lost it.  So if you have any questions, just comment. Please comment.

This is something that I would never do normally, but what do I have to lose? 10 months? That's nothing in the grand scheme of things. Part of me is saying that this might not be a good idea, but the rest of me is really considering this.

I haven't been accepted yet, I need to do a phone interview (30-45 minutes) and then I'll find out after that. I should know by May 15th.

Please comment with your opinions.
