[part 2 of Chapter 1]
“Hayato,” Takichi called me to sit down. He was sitting in the middle of Hiroyuki and Kamiyama, perhaps to avoid violence between the two.
I sat down opposite to Takichi with the packages and the letter separating us like how the clouds dived the heavens and the earth. He handed me the letter which we concluded that was sent by a person we know, maybe giving me the authority to open and read it before them. I opened the envelope and pulled out a piece of yellow paper. I scanned the letter and searched for the sender. And what I read struck me.
“Ito Mizuki...”
“Ha?!” Hiroyuki requested me to repeat what I said. “Please say it again.”
“Mizuki sent this letter and, perhaps, also these packages.”
“Mizuki-chan?” Takichi questioned while raising an eyebrow.
“Hontou desu ka?!” Kamiyama gasped in disbelief.
“Did she say where she is now?” Hiroyuki asked. I shook my head no.
“Mou~” Both Hiroyuki and Kamiyama sighed.
“Please read what was written there,” Takichi pleaded. “Just ignore these two.”
“Gomenasai, minna-san,” I started to read the letter. “I might be gone already by the time you receive this letter. I don’t think I could come back anymore.”
“Huh?” Kamiyama became confused.
“What did she meant for not coming back anymore?” Hiroyuki questioned us.
I looked at them and then bowed my head, “She’s gone now.”
“Of course, she’s gone.”
I knew that this time will come that I should reveal this to them. I could sense that both Kamiyama and Hiroyuki were acting such fool although they understood what I said and what Mizuki meant by those words. They couldn’t accept the fact and they wouldn’t.
“She died three years ago.”
“What?!” Hiroyuki smirked while the other two remained silent. “You’ve got to be kidding, Hayato-san.”
“That is the truth,” I calmly said although the pain in their eyes was piercing me. “Just accept it.”
“Don’t give that damn!” Kamiyama finally blurted out and slammed the table. “How could you say that, huh?! You disappeared weeks before she left and then you’re here, telling us that she died three years ago?” He continued his rage, “What do you know? How could you say that is the truth?!”
I refused to answer. I didn’t know what could happen next. I was afraid also to accept the truth. I didn’t know what to do. I heard the voice of Yuki from the heavens. He said that he’s on his way to help me explain to them the reality. I refused his help and said that I could handle this alone. But he was persistent and immediately flew down from the heavens to the same abandoned building that we both landed the first time I disguised as a human. I sighed in defeat.
“Answer me!” Kamiyama snorted.
“I know everything.”
And with that, I unconsciously returned to my real self. My human clothes vanished and were replaced by my original clothes as an angel. The light brown highlights also disappear. And the amber color of my eyes returned into grey. And to complete my transformation, my wings spread out.
“Hayato...” Takichi whispered. One could see that the three of them were stunned by my transformation.
“You’re an angel?” Kamiyama became confused again.
“This is also the truth.”
“Are you trying to piss me off?!” Hiroyuki stood and walked towards me. He grabbed in the upper part of my robe and then gave me a deathly glare. “So what if you’re an angel?” He turned away and then looked at me again. “If you call yourself an angel, how come you weren’t there when she was gone?”
“I was there,” I replied. “I was with her.”
“And then, how come you didn’t save her?!”
“I tried,” I sighed. “But I could not do anything about it. It was her time.”
He released me, or it was better to say that Hiroyuki pushed me. He shouted in frustration, “Get lost!”
“Hiroyuki,” Takichi calmed his brother and then turned to me. “Stay. Tell us more truth. Tell us everything.” He sighed and bent down really low, “Onegaishimasu!”
Takichi lifted his head up and looked at me. I could see him pleading intensely with his eyes. I could see his tears that he tried not to shed. I could see his pain that he tried to hide it from other people’s eyes. I could see his longing to know what really happened. I could see him as an innocent child begging an adult to give the reason why the sky is blue or why people could speak while other animals cannot.
I started to recall everything from the start, from the day I went down from the heavens until she disappeared. I knew that I could not tell them everything since I am not the one to tell it. Mizuki had carefully planned it already and I had no right to took over what she had started because I am not capable of knowing what she really wanted to say to them and the emotions behind it. I just came back here to give her a hand. It was the righteous thing that I could do and nothing else.
I looked what was inside of the room once again and memorized everything, from the position of the smallest things up to the expressions painted in their faces. I stood up amidst them and slowly spread out my arms, together with my wings. I closed my eyes and chanted. A blinding light burst suddenly making the three of them covered their eyes. In a blink, we were sucked into a vacuum and before they could ask where we were, that nothingness became a small room. One by one, furniture started to appear. In a matter of seconds, there she was, lying on the bed with life-supporting machines surrounding her and a mask covering her nose and mouth. A laptop was connected to her brain through a helmet-like signal transmitter. She was staring at the low ceiling like she was just waiting for something.
“Mizuki,” I heard Kamiyama whispered. He went close to her and kneeled at one side of the bed while we stood still by the door. He called her name once again with a louder voice, “Mizuki.” He kept calling her but there was no reply still. “Mizuki!” He called for the last time and tried to shake her shoulders. But he failed. Tears were gushing from his eyes as he tried again to hold her. No matter what he does, his hands kept on passing by her body, not able to affect her. It seemed like we were made transparent, making others fail to see us, yet we could see and hear them. It felt like being a spirit watching over his love ones but failing to let them feel that he’s around. Looking at the three of them was like looking at lost herd of sheep with nowhere to go at the cliff of a mountain.
“We came back to the past,” I explained them, making Kamiyama jerked his face up. “We are here in the same place and time when Mizuki left the house.”
“Doushite,” Hiroyuki murmured. “Why did she go here? Of all possible places she could run away to, why did she go in this hospital? She didn’t have any business here.”
“She’s dying when she left.”
“How come she was dying then?”Hiroyuki approached the bed and sat at Mizuki’s feet. ”That day is a day for us to have fun,” he could not stop himself and started to have teary eyes. “Isn’t it, Mizuki?”
“Mizuki,” Takichi patted Hiroyuki’s shoulder and then looked at Mizuki who still was unaware of our presence, “is really great in hiding these things.”
“What was her sickness?” Kamiyama got himself together again and stood up. “Was there any medication for it?”
