Morning had broken and Nichkhun had barely slept at all, seeing Wooyoung the night before after four years had invaded his mind. How could Wooyoung have left without saying goodbye, how is it that he had a son now, and why didn’t Wooyoung love him? He had to admit that he had never really said it either, but he couldn’t hide the fact that he did love Wooyoung, and that he had loved Wooyoung for a very long time. He thought back to the few days before Wooyoung had disappeared, thinking what might have happened that could have sent Wooyoung off.

“Khun, wake up. You’ll be late.” Wooyoung shook his roommate for the third time this morning. Nichkhun had been up late last night working on his presentation and although Wooyoung tried to be supportive and stay up with him, the younger had fallen asleep too early. “Khunnie, please get up!” Wooyoung shook him again but the older just groaned in refusal. “Khun, your presentation! Don’t you care?”
“Youngie, give five more minutes.” Nichkhun groaned.
“No Khun! Get up!” Wooyoung fussed. He had given up, and decided to slump his body atop of Nichkhun’s burying his face into Nichkhun’s chest. “Get up Khun, get up.” Wooyoung insisted his lips pressed against Nichkhun’s bare chest.
Nichkhun chuckled at his friend’s persistence. “Okay, I’m up.” He said bringing his hands to stroke the younger’s hair. “Youngie, if you wanted to cuddle you should have just asked.” Nichkhun joked wrapping his legs against the boy’s waist.
“Khunnie!” Wooyoung whined but Nichkhun held his grip, holding the boy in place as he went back to sleep. “Khunnie, please don’t do this. You need to start getting ready. Your presentation is at 10.” Wooyoung pleaded.
“Relax babe, my presentation is at 12. I got time.” Nichkhun said.
“Babe?” Wooyoung asked curiously.
Nichkhun suddenly became aware of the slip of his mouth and slowly let go of Wooyoung as the other turned around slowly to face him. “Sorry, just caught up in the moment I guess.” Nichkhun embarrassedly admitted.
“Khun, do you think it’s time we talk about…us?” Wooyoung asked.
“Do you want to talk about…us?” Nichkhun asked.
“I think we should… I mean we keep doing these things and yet I don’t know where I stand in your life.” Wooyoung looked away.
“Woo… I like you very much. In fact, I can say that I love you even… but I don’t know if it’s that kind of love. I’ve never fallen in love with a guy before, or anyone for that fact.” Nichkhun said.
“Well I love you Khun. I have been…in love with you.” Wooyoung said.
“I know you have.” Nichkhun said.
“But you don’t feel the same way?” Wooyoung asked.
“I certainly care for you Woo and I do want to be with you, but… I just don’t know.” Nichkhun said saddened.
“Okay. Well there’s no rush, whenever you’re ready.” Wooyoung said hiding his eyes.
“Give me a couple of days then I’ll be ready. I just want to do this right, I want to tell you in a special way.” Nichkhun asked and lifted Wooyoung’s eyes to meet his. “Okay?” Nichkhun asked and Wooyoung agreed with a nod.
Nichkhun got ready for his presentation, trying to pick out a tie to wear with his suit. “Youngie, blue or red?” He held out the options for the other to choose.
“Red, it suits you better.” Wooyoung said.
“Can you help me tie it? You seem to tie them better than I do.” Nichkhun asked and Wooyoung gladly agreed and began to tie the tie for the other. “You know Youngie, if I get this internship, I may be away all summer. Are you okay with that?” Nichkhun asked.
“All summer?” Wooyoung wasn’t aware of this tid-bit of information.
“Yes, it’s a nine week internship. Are you going to be okay by yourself?” Nichkhun smiled.
“I’ll just come with you. You can pack me in your luggage.” Wooyoung teased.
“Not with those cheeks.” Nichkhun pinched them softly.
“Then I’ll just have to visit you. I don’t know. What are you insinuating?” Wooyoung asked.
“I’m implying you should come with me. If I get chosen, I’m going to visit this weekend, I’ll find a place for the both of us. You can come visit when you can, and we can work on us… being a couple.” Nichkhun said.
“Okay…” Wooyoung blushed. Certainly enough Nichkhun was chosen for the internship and he had decided to visit the city where it would take place. “What am I supposed to do here without you?” Wooyoung asked.
“You’ll be fine, baby. Don’t worry. It’s just a couple of days. I’ll be back before you know it.” Nichkhun said as he proceeded to pack his belongings. Wooyoung saw Nichkhun to the train station and they shared a friendly hug before Nichkhun boarded his train. “Two days, and I’ll be home and I’ll be your boyfriend.” Nichkhun smiled.
“Come home safely then.” Wooyoung said.
“I will. I love you, Youngie.” Nichkhun said then turned to board his train.
Wooyoung returned home with a warm feeling on his heart. Nichkhun had said he loved him, and he knew it was true. It felt like he was walking on clouds and he couldn’t wipe the silly grin from his smile. He reached home and got in, plopping himself on the sofa, the lingering scent of Nichkhun’s cologne all over his coat, on the sofa and in the essence of the room.
Wooyoung could fall asleep and he almost did if it wasn’t for the knock at the door. Wooyoung got up and answered it, surprised to see a girl standing at the other side of the door.
“Hi…I’m looking for Nichkhun.” The girl seemed nervous.
“I’m sorry, he’s not home. Can I help you?” Wooyoung asked curiously.
“No, no. I needed to see him but if he’s not here.. I’ll just leave.” The girl began to sob and turn away but Wooyoung grabbed her hand.
“Miss, what’s wrong?” Wooyoung said in concern. The girl turned around, and maybe because she wore black that Wooyoung hadn’t noticed but the brush of her belly against his hand confirmed it. The girl was pregnant. Wooyoung didn’t need to hear it, he knew exactly what was happening. The girl rushed into his shoulders and began to cry hysterically.
“I don’t know what to do… I can’t have this baby… I can’t do it alone.” She kept saying amidst her tears. Wooyoung couldn’t believe it, how could Nichkhun have fathered a child and who was this girl. Wooyoung led the girl into their apartment and sat her down on the sofa.
“I’m Wooyoung, Nichkhun’s b…best friend.” Wooyoung covered.
“I’m Suzy… the stupid girl who had a one night stand with Nichkhun.” She wiped her tears with the sleeve of her jacket. One night stand? When did Nichkhun have a one night stand? Wooyoung wondered.
“It happened months ago, he was drunk at a bar and before I knew it I had taken him home and we had sex. The next morning he had left, and I knew that I had fallen trap to a stupid mistake. I didn’t think anything of it, until I found out I was pregnant. I was trying to reach him but I couldn’t find him. Finally, a friend of a friend told me he knew him and gave me the address. I don’t know what to do, I’m so scared.” She rambled on, her words lost in Wooyoung’s thoughts. Wooyoung knew he had no formal stake to Nichkhun, and that before a few months ago, his relationship with Nichkhun was strictly platonic - a friendship, but he couldn’t help feel a bit betrayed. He had been in love with Nichkhun for years, and for some reason he had thought that maybe their friendship meant more, but he was now realizing that he was wrong - that all of this might be too new to the other.
“I can’t tell my parents, they’d kill me. I can’t tell anyone, I’m so scared. What do I do?” Suzy looked up at Wooyoung. Wooyoung was in no place to give this girl advice, he too was just as lost as she was in this entire situation. If Nichkhun has a child with this girl, where would that place him? He didn’t want to think about it, he didn’t want to have to make a decision either.
“Khun is out of town, he’ll be back in a few days. Till then you can stay here and wait for him.” Wooyoung said, the only clear thoughts he had in his head at the moment. Wooyoung excused himself and retreated to his room, where his tears started to fall. He was looking forward to the new life he would have with Nichkhun, and now he was blindsided by this surprise - knowing that Nichkhun would want to do the right thing, raise the child, possibly marry this girl. It didn’t seem fair, but Wooyoung knew he couldn’t possibly be selfish towards this child - it wouldn’t be fair to him either. His feet came crashing to the ground again and he could feel his heart break, this is not what he had in mind for him and Khun but what else could he do.
Night had taken over and Wooyoung had fallen asleep, leaving the girl in the living room by herself. Suddenly he heard a screeching cry from the living room, followed by a scream. He quickly got up concerned that there might be something wrong with Suzy. As he reached the living room, indeed the girl was on the ground on all fours, wincing and crying in pain as she held her stomach.
“What’s wrong?” Wooyoung rushed to her side.
“I think it’s time. It hurts!” She said, her lips quivering in pain.
“Okay, let me get you to the hospital.” Wooyoung said and helped her up. He brought her to the street and hailed a taxi bringing her to the nearby hospital. When they arrived a group of nurses immediately came to the girl’s aide. A doctor noted that there were some complications and that they would have to deliver the baby immediately. Wooyoung suddenly felt nothing else but worry.
“Are you the father?” A nurse asked and Wooyoung didn’t know how to answer.
“Are you the father!” She asked again in urgency and Wooyoung did the only thing he could think of nodding in a daze.
“You’ll need to dress up for the delivery room.” The nurse instructed him and led him to the delivery room. Wooyoung watched in both horror and worry as Suzy gripped his hands tightly following each instruction that the nurses and doctors gave her. Push. Stop. Breathe. Push. Wooyoung’s head started to spin and it seemed like this nightmare was prolonging for hours when suddenly the sound of a cry echoed in the room.
“It’s a boy!” The doctor smiled holding up the child for the mother to see. Suzy lifted her head and smiled faintly. Then a nurse prompted the doctor.
“We’re losing a heartbeat.” The nurse warned and the baby was quickly taken away. Wooyoung was a in panic, all he could do was care for that child and although he knew that this might take away any risk of losing Nichkhun, all he wanted was the baby to live. He followed the nurses who had taken the baby and watched as they huddled around him, Wooyoung could only recall one other time when he had fallen in love instantaneously, and it was with the child’s father.
Then the nurse spoke again. “We lost her.” She said defeated as the cry of the baby became louder. Wooyoung turned around whereas he was thinking the baby was in danger he hadn’t realized that it was the mother that had died.
Hours had passed and the doctors had broken the news that Suzy had died with the complications of labor. The nurses brought him to the nursery and placed the baby boy into his arms.
“Do you have a name?” A nurse asked and Wooyoung had no answer. “It’s okay, I’m sure with everything that happened today, you can’t even think of anything else.” She patted him on the back.
Wooyoung looked down at the swaddled infant and began to cry without hesitation. This was much bigger than him, much bigger than Nichkhun… this was about a child, a helpless baby alone in the world, just like he was.
Wooyoung stayed at the nursery, and watched from the other side of the glass window, in awe of the baby. When suddenly he felt his phone buzz. He reached for it and answered.
“Youngie, guess what? I got the job! They’ve secured me a position at the company after graduation. Isn’t that great?” Nichkhun’s voice came over the speaker.
“Yeah…” Wooyoung said wanting to say “You’re a dad! Surprise!’
“I just have to make sure that nothing stops me, this is exactly what I wanted. I can’t let anything keep me away from it.” Nichkhun said and Wooyoung hung up the phone immediately. This child was going to change everything. For him and for Nichkhun.
