Happy 7 Years Anniversary!
彼 and I celebrated our 7th anniversary together last weekend with Mala Hotpot!
Nothing can beat spending time together enjoying our favorite, cheap, tasty Ririhong Mala hotpot from Chinatown.
Unplanned trip to Ipoh
彼 and I returned from our unplanned trip to Ipoh this morning. It was a short trip and at very short notice. 彼's extended family (his mother's family) in Ipoh have been like going through a series of unfortunate events since Chinese New Year. His grandfather fell very ill, is now mostly bedridden, and suffering from senile dementia. His 3rd aunt, who had been taking care of his grandfather and grandmother, had a bad fall and fractured her pelvic bone. His uncle had not been taking medicine for his pre-existing heart problems regularly and ended up hospitalized with organ failures.
彼 and I had planned to visit Ipoh in April to perform the customary tea ceremony for his grandparents, who were not in good enough physical health to travel to Singapore for our wedding last October. However, the travel plans were delayed after 彼's contract on his current ship was extended from April till June. 彼's mother went back over the last weekend to visit them and felt it was better for 彼 and I to visit his grandfather as grandfather was doing pretty poorly, and in her words, seem to be hanging in there just to wait for the customary wedding tea from his first grandson.
Thankfully, E and my team were very understanding and immediately ok-ed for me to go off on Tuesday after a quick handover. 彼's company was also very compassionate and allowed him to leave, on the grounds that he return to work on Saturday night. With that, we applied for urgent leave from our companies, bought air tickets on Monday, quickly packed and flew off on Tuesday afternoon.
彼's aunts and grandparents were more traditional, and chose for us to do the tea ceremony on Friday as it was a more auspicious day on the lunar calendar. In the days leading up to it, we spent time chatting with grandmother, standing by grandfather's bedside hoping for a sliver of recognition, helping 彼's aunts with the setting up of emails and facebook accounts for their home decor shop, accompanying his aunts to run errands, shop, eat etc. 彼's grandfather was very weak and bedridden most of the time, but from our 2nd day around there, he was more alert and even recognized 彼 at one point.
We had a simple and traditional tea ceremony on Friday. 彼's grandparents have an altar at home for Gods and ancestors, so we prayed to them with 彼's grandmother's instructions before serving tea to 彼's grandparents. 彼's grandmother was really happy and jolly throughout the days we were there.
On the same day of our tea ceremony, we watched news of the New Zealand Christchurch shooting. 彼 had friends who sent him clips of the shooting and I saw part of it (regretfully). It was just so terrible. Why must there be so much hatred based on differences in race, ethnicity, religion, nationality etc?
Ipoh Food
Ipoh could rename itself as F-O-O-D and it would be totally legit. We ate so much because everyone in 彼's extended family loves feeding 彼. ^^;
Chee Cheong Fun! Cantonese style rice-noodle-roll with prawn/char siew) in it. And my favorite teh-c (Tea with evaporated milk). Ipoh drinks are a tad too sweet for me though.
Ice Cendol along the road sold in a customized truck~ Nothing beats eating ice cendol on the road side on a super hot day.
The best tau huay (sweet soy beancurd) in Ipoh (and maybe in the whole of Malaysia and Singapore). So soft and smooth.
彼's favorite curry mee!
Gift from 彼
I've been wanting to get a new workbag and wallet as my current ones, gifts from 彼 as well, are around 4 years old, getting quite dirty with torn frays etc. So when we came across this lovely wallet and bag, it was love and first sight and 彼 gited them to me. Now we're looking around for a wallet for hiim as well, as we bought his wallet around the same time we bought my last wallet.
Happy 1 year old to Yuki!
Yuki celebrated her first birthday today! Mom and Kor arranged a family dinner for her at a pet cafe Happenstance.
(Photos stolen from mayu)
Yuki with her meaty pupcake. It was huge so we didn't let her finish everything at one go. We let her eat half of it and brought the rest home to be eaten tomorrow.
There were many other pups, and one huge chowchow who loved 彼 to bites for some unknown reason. lol The food were pretty tasty and in huge portions! Definitely looking forward to visiting again.
Singapore Food
Tokyo Sundubu was one of my favorite shops when I was in Yokohama, so when I saw it at Changi Airport after checking in, 彼 and I decided to eat it before boarding our frills-free Scoot flight. It was good, but still not as good as what I ate in Japan. Different ingredient sources I guess.
Lor mee from North Bridge Market. I last ate it 3 years ago before I went to Yokohama for training. The stall remained but it was no longer run by an old uncle. The two young ladies running the stall cooked up a pretty good meal, though i think it still tasted better previously.
Indian Dosai~ One of my favorite breakfasts~
