Previous Chapter

Chapter Seven

The Sports Festival was finally here! I've worked so hard to plan everything out and I wanted everything to be perfect. It was mostly because it was the first time my parents would be coming to this academy, and I felt like I wanted to make a good impression.

I stood at the front gate welcoming parents and other guests as they entered. Surprisingly enough, a lot of people showed up, more than what I was expecting. I assumed the parents of these kids would be too busy to show up, but Tadayoshi assured me it was like a social call. Just another place business and competition could be held.

I frowned as I thought of Tadayoshi dreading this day, particularly because his Dad was going to pay a visit today. I was really nervous, though I shouldn't be. He didn't know me, and I didn't know him. Either way, I wish the butterfiles in my stomach would go away.

An arm rested on my shoulder, giving me a little shock. But with the giggles, I knew it was Yasu. "I'm a little busy here Yasu, do you need something?"
"Why so tense?"
"My parents aren't here yet," I frowned. I continued waving and handing out pamphlets for our school.
Yasu started sucking on a lolipop, "Oh yeah, did you want to meet my Mom today? It'll probably be after the festival, but still..."
I quickly turned around and grabbed his shoulders, "Are you serious?! Can I really meet her?!"
He was caught off guard, dropping his lolipop, "Aww man, Aya-chan~~~!"
"Ah, I'm sorry... Um here," I said, digging out a peppermint from my pocket.
But he continued to frown, "I don't like peppermint."
I looked up suddenly as Tadayoshi smacked him on his head, "Quit eating candy anyways, you'll just end up getting cavities."
I laughed, "Yeah Yasu! Then all your teeth will fall out!"
"Ne~~~" Tadayoshi said as he took a step towards me, leaning down to push his shoulder against mine.

Tadayoshi chuckled along with me. I was happy he was here. In the time preparing for the sports festival, I was able to spend most of my time with him. It's been a bit upsetting not getting any more memories, but I think it was still worth it. Afterall, I felt like I was special to him. And he was special to me.

Hopefully we would have time today so that maybe he could meet my parents; if they ever showed up! But just as I was complaining here they come. But terrior struck through my body as Maru and Subaru walked along side my family.

"Oh no..."

Yasu and Tadayoshi both looked at me and followed my gaze to the small group headed towards us. My parents and Tara did their best to dress up for the occasion, so they wouldn't be out of place here, but Subaru and Maru looked like they just rolled out of bed and came over here! What was happening?! My two worlds were suddenly colliding....

I nervously held out my hand towards my family, "T-This is my Father and Mother, my sister Tara, and, um, my friends Subaru and Maru." I looked back and forth between Subaru and Tadayoshi, a hole suddenly forming in my stomach.
Tadayoshi bowed the perfect bow, "It's an honor to finally meet all of you. Aya-san is always telling me such great stories about you."
My mother blushed at the notion, "Oh my, and who are you?"
"M-Mom, this is Tadayoshi-kun, and Yasuda-kun, my classmates."
Yasu bowed and smiled, "It's good to meet you all. Would you like a tour of our academy?"
I quickly looked at him, "But Yasu I-"
He grabbed the pamphlets I was holding and pushed me lightly towards my family, "I'll take over, just go have some fun before the events start. Okura, why don't you go with her."
I smiled, "Thank you."
He just winked as he turned to start handing out more fliers.

I looked at Subaru and Maru, they were nonchalantly looking around the place, but I knew they were actually judging Yasu and Tadayoshi. I smiled at Tadayoshi, "Would you mind taking my parents and Tara ahead, I need to speak with these two for a moment."

He looked at them and then back to me, nodding as he led my family inwards towards the building. I spun around and grabbed both of their arms, dragging them behind a nearby tree. I was unbelievably upset, they should have told me they were coming!

"What are you guys doing here?! You better not be planning something!"
Maru put his hand on my head and pat it over and over like I was a dog, "There there Aya-chan, we were invited by your parents, so of course we couldn't say no."
I pushed his arm aside and looked at Subaru, "Is that the truth?"
He just rolled his eyes, "Yes it's true. We're not that bad as to ruin this day for you."

I frowned at his lack of interest towards me, but I was getting used to it. Ever since that day I turned him down, he's been more hotheaded and impatient. I guess I deserved his indirect frustration towards me.

I bowed, "I'm sorry for accusing you two."
This made Maru really uncomfortable, so he quickly lifted me back up, "Ah no, Aya-chan it's ok. We probably should have at least given you a heads up. You looked pretty shocked to see us in front of your school friends."
"Thanks Maru," I said softly.
"So..." he looked back and forth between me and Subaru, "I, um, I think I'll go catch up with your parents. I can smell something delicious coming from that direction!"

He patted me on the back as he left, leaving me alone with Subaru. We both kind of just stood there, both of us not knowing what to do or say. To be honest, I haven't been alone with him since then. Maru, or people from work have always been there.

"Subaru."
"Aya, the truth is... I wanted to see for myself, see what you chose over me."
I couldn't look him in the eyes, "Look all you want, look until your satisfied. But I have to go now."
"No wait, here." He grabbed my hand and quickly put something in it, "I thought you might need this today."

As he left, I looked down to see a cute red charm with pink cherry blssoms sewed in. I bit down on my lip, smiling as I hurried up to run after him. I pushed my body into his, I finally felt like things could start getting back to the way they were before.

"Thank you Subaru," I said as I ran past him, waving as I headed for the school.

After showing my parents and Tara around with Tadayoshi, I headed to the girls area to get dressed for the sports events. As I got ready, Hinata-chan happened to pass by in a hurry. She back tracked since she saw me, "I've been looking for you!"
"W-What's wrong?"
"I wanted to tell you to step down from any events today, we don't want you getting injured."
I continued getting ready, putting on tennis shoes, "Don't worry, I'm just running in the relay. And besides, if I stepped down, it would just give those girls more reason to bully me..."
She leaned down so she could get in my way, "Listen, right now you're brain is struggling to get the memories back, I'm just worried if you get a blow to the head, something worse might come from it."
I took a step away to finish putting on my shoes. I put my hand on her shoulder, "I've been feeling really good these past few weeks. I've been able to talk to Tadayoshi-kun more than ever, and slowly I've been feeling like I can start to remember. Isn't that a good thing?"
She crossed her arms, "I think we should tell your parents."
"I told you, I didn't want to worry them!" I pressed my lips together and bowed, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have yelled at you."
She sighed, "Aya-chan, I'm just worried about you, that's all."
I looked her in the eyes and smiled, "Thank you, but really, I'll be alright. Now I should probably get going. I'll see you later!"

She watched me as I ran off towards the track, her frown refusing to leave her face.

I ran up to the area where everyone was gathered, my classmates, the staff, the families, and anyone else invited. Hurrying over to my group, I ran past an upset-looking Tadayoshi as he followed an older man. I looked back and noticed the similarites in their faces, it had to be his father! He looked very stern, and had a lot of wrinkles; really he was very intimidating.

My body shivered from the thought of getting on his bad side, and suddenly I could understand why Tadayoshi had major father issues.

"Aya! Hurry up and get over here," my Mother called, waving her hand.
I ran over to her and the others, "Sorry, I got distracted by something."
"Now's not the time for that Aya! We want you to win!"
I laughed at my Mom, "Don't worry, I not only stuck my nose in books, but I trained too! I'll show you!"
My father smiled, "We're already proud of you, just make sure you have fun."
"Thanks Dad."
Tara hugged me tight then flicked me on the forehead, "I say win!" She grinned, eventually getting the giggles.
I put my fists up, "I'll do my best!"

I ran off, only to hear Subaru cheer my name. I turned around and pulled out his charm from under my t-shirt and waved it so he could see I had it. I was happy to see him put his fist up to his mouth; embarrassed Subaru.

My place was right in the middle of the track, but I was the anchor, thanks to the help of my favorite bullys, so that meant I had to wait till the end, all the pressure on me. I felt really nervous, so many famous and prominant people were here, and I didn't want to look like a fool.

The gun went off and the cheering started. All the first runners bolted from their spots and began running around the track, each of them handing the baton to the next person. I breathed in deep, trying to block out all of the noise and concentrate on our runners. One more girl to go, and then it was me. As she passed, I took my place on the track to wait for her arrival.

Within minutes she was already approaching me. A couple of girls were ahead of me, getting a small lead as I slowly started running, reaching my arm out behind me waiting for the small plastic stick to touch my hand. And there it was, I grabbed it tight and ran with all my might.

There was no wind today, but I pushed myself so fast, all I could feel was wind on my face. My muscles felt tired, but my mind was pushing my body to win. With the adrenaline, I managed to pull ahead into first place as the we turned the last bend before the long stretch to the finish line. I could see it in front of me, a long white strip of paper hung several feet above the ground with the word 'finish' on it. I was so close, it was mine.

But within the silence that my mind created, I could hear a woman's voice. A singular woman, cheering out for her daughter.

"Chiyo! Keep going! You're almost there! Don't...." My head twitched a bit, my eyes begining to make the finish line blur, was it always that far away. I could have sworn I was closer.

But instead of seeing the long piece of white paper, I was now starting to see the maroon colored ground replacing my line of sight. I was falling. Pain not only shot through my head, but now through my foot and up my leg.

"CHIYO!"

She had to be calling for me!

In agony, I turned my head back to see the woman calling out to me. But the only thing I saw was the knee of the girl flying by me, hitting me in my face.

I could only mumble out one word before unconsiousness took me.

"...Mommy"
