advice requested re: antivirus software and e-mail clients

So.  My Norton Internet Security subscription expired on my laptop, and I am trying to decide whether or not to renew it.  (The laptop came pre-installed with a trial subscription.)

Here's the thing:  Norton's support is not the greatest and, according to Consumer Reports, the program itself is not the greatest.  When I last updated our antivirus/antispyware/antispam software on our desktop, I opted for a la carte protection from several different programs instead of buying one handy suite.  Better protection, bigger pain in the butt.

Now I'm thinking I'd really like the convenience of a suite again.  The top-rated one in Consumer Reports is Trend Micro's PC-Cillin, which I have used before and really like.  BUT:  It does not support Eudora 7.x (which is the reason I stopped using it on the desktop and went the a la carte route), and I refuse to use Microsoft Outlook (which would solve all of the many compatibility problems I have suffered over the years because of my adherence to Eudora, but which I hate).  I don't like Pegasus Mail's interface, so using that as my e-mail client is not an option, either.

So, my options are:

1)  Switch to Outlook (or find another e-mail client that's supported by PC-Cillin) and get PC-Cillin;

2) Renew Norton (or get another program that works with Eudora, but isn't as good as PC-Cillin);

3) Check my mail on the web when using my laptop, and get PC-Cillin--which is really just a way of putting off dealing with the problem, because I *do* want to keep an e-mail client on my desktop, and when my current protection runs out on that computer I'm going to have to go through all of this again.  And it would be good to have the same program on both computers, since they're networked.

Suggestions, anyone?  I need to resolve the issue pronto, because until I do I cannot use the laptop for much of anything.

UPDATE:  I'm now thinking I might switch to Mozilla Thunderbird as my e-mail client on my laptop.  Eudora seems to be dying out (they've made it open-source and are no longer updating it), so I've sort of been thinking I should replace it eventually anyway.  And Thunderbird is supported by PC-Cillin.  And using it on the laptop first will provide a good way to test it out, before I go whole hog and replace Eudora on my desktop PC.

If anyone out there uses Thunderbird, please let me know how you like it!
