Well, there's the girl Matt wanted to see.

He really likes his spot at the couch, so he doesn't walk over right away. Instead, he goes for the craning-his-neck-hopefully-and-waving option.

It's also possible that he's delaying heading over because he's really not sure how to phrase his end of this conversation.

Sadly, Nita is trying to cross-reference a note about code-switching and misses the waving for the moment.

Dammit!

Well, Matt slips his earbuds into a pocket of his bag. Maybe he should wait and just call her later? Oh wait, even magical phone calls can't save them from being phone calls. He should be relieved he's run into her in person.

But maybe first he should finish his tea.

Patiently, a corner of his brain asks him, Are you a coward?

"Please keep anyone from stealing my stuff," he tells a rat, rising. "I'm prepared to tip exorbitantly."

Nita catches him in her peripheral vision as he approaches and looks up, breaking into a smile.

"Hey, you."

Kite is staring down the long dark tunnel of pre-Christmas exams, which means if she doesn't transition from the procrastination phase to the studying phase, she's going to hit the 'oh God, I'm a fucking idiot' panicking phase.

Hence the tower of textbooks (Biology, intro to Anthropology, Calculus), notebooks, and flashcards that lands on her chosen table with a thump.

"Coffee," she tells a passing waitrat. "And keep 'em coming."

Nita looks up and grins sympathetically at her.

"Midterms?"

"Finals," she replies, waving a flashcard.

"Fighting the good fight."

She winces.

"Ouch. You look like you're in it for the long haul, too."

Sameth has been working on ideas about the Wall and stops when he sees Ariadne's books.

Those are some beautiful buildings and the way that wall joins just there has a symmetry which would work well in an older part of the Wall. Any dust that drops off of him onto her book is completely an accident.

Ariadne glances up, blinking, and gives him a polite smile.

"Can I help you with something?"

"Sorry, I was just thinking that kind of join would work well for something I'm working on,"

He realizes that he's being rude and takes a step back.

Someone is watching you, Nita. Mostly because your Speech is interesting.

Look up if you dare.

"Ooo?"

The inquisitive noise is accompanied by a head peering over Nita's shoulder. ...Yes, Xelloss enjoys tempting fate. Rather a lot, thank you.

Nita startles, pulling away and turning to see who's in her personal space.

". . . Hi?"

A being of pure chaos and evil, disguised as a mild-mannered priest, with a cheerful smile.

"Hello! I was curious about your work, miss."

. . . Well he's kind of unsettling. Also, cheerful. These things may be related.

"It's just my linguistics homework," she says, politely enough.
