Basically TV themed

For the first time since 2012 I couldn't get a Sherlock calendar from amazon.com this year. There was one on the UK site but they won't post to Australia, and it wasn't available on the Australian site. I thought I'd be clever and went back through all my old Sherlock calendars until I found one where  January 1st was a Friday, and 2016 seemed to ( Read more... )

I need to watch the Doctor Who special again - although really I need to watch last season again first, because what with everything I've entirely forgotten what was going on, and I feel like I missed alot of stuff in the special...

I know what you mean about her being happy to blow an entire race to oblivion, especially considering Gallifrey... I wonder what message that's supposed to send us - that some things are just so evil they have to be entirely destroyed, because there's no hope of redemption? Like you say, it seems quite ante-the Doctor of the past... In so many ways she was better than human in previous reincarnations - I don't want her sinking to our level, I want her to be a shining example of what it's possible for humans to be!

And yeah, I've never quite warmed to Graham, because he does have that whole old-man-knows-best thing going on...

That's it exactly... I'm hoping it really is character development, and not just Chris Chibnall tossing decades of characterisation in the bin because he thought it made a good story. But this is the guy who brought us the fight between a cyberwoman and a pterodactyl so I don't hold out too much hope :-( .

Finally I've found someone who liked that ep! :-) . I rabbited on so much about this show that my son finally decided he'd give it a try - and that was the ep he tuned into. He told me later that he tuned in just in time to see the fight between the cyberwoman and Myfanwy, and that alone was enough to make him switch off. Have to admit, when I rewatch S1, I skip that ep.

Lol - I don't understand why people pick this ep as particularly bad. Okay - surviving cyberwoman, and cyberwoman vs pterodactly fight, but pterodactyl in Cardiff! Time-space rift in Cardiff! Captain Jack Harkness! Blowfish driving a car through Cardiff! (That said, if you're introducing the Torchwood-verse to someone, it's not the episode I'd pick because you miss all the background as to why there might be a cyberwoman and a pterodactyl in the first place, in which case you have nothing to mitigate the silliness of the premise, which the rest of the series has done by the time you get there).

I love that we find out Ianto - so calm, so apparently polite and quiet and dull except for the fact that he works at TW - has this incredible background (which ties into the DW-verse). I love that he's so much more in control of TW than any of the other characters - even Jack - because he's able to do this without them knowing. And I think that's what's so brilliantly reflected in the others going out together and throwing him the toys they ( ... )

You've certainly identified some good points in relation to Ianto. There are a few things though that leave me feeling bad after watching this ep ( ... )

No, I think the blowfish in the car is only in one ep - I was talking generally about suspension of disbelief over the whole series. *g* And fair enough, we all have our hills to die on!

Young guy dragging half-cyber girlfriend across country without discovery?
But surely bung her in the back of a van and job done...?! (Granted life-support etc., but I can go with her being more stable to start with and gradually declining as the support of the half-finished conversion failed).

For me I think the fact that Ianto didn't know Jack when he came up with the plan explains why he wouldn't take him into his confidence. He knew that the cybermen were the enemy and had all been destroyed, but presumably like all ordinary humans he didn't really know the explanation/background to it all, so I don't have a problem with his making Lisa-his-love the priority. He doesn't know about it all like we do! And even if he did - you take the person you love most in the world and watch them half killed but then kept alive on some weird machine, and ( ... )

It's fun to rehash! Almost as much fun as a rewatch.
