picking a birthday card

Feb 21, 2007 10:24

It is massive birthday time with a lot of my friends right now including Brad, Jason, Dad, Jessie, Dustin, Anton, and soon Derek. Naturally I went to Halmark to get some cards. Jessie's and Jason's were very easy to pick out. Brad got beer instead of a card, Dustin gets a phone call, and Anton gets an email. I don't have to worry about Derek yet because his isn't until March. This leaves my dad, so I went straight to the "HIS" section of birthdays and found the "FATHER" section. I was hoping to find one that made fun of his age... balding head, saggy stomach etc. Instead all I found was sentamental stuff. Barf. I put every single one back after reading the first line: "You have the best advice" "You are the most loving father" "I hope I can give my kids what you've given me" What is that?! I'm sorry. My dad and I do not have a father-daughter relationship and if you know me you know the whole story. It took me forever just to find a card that said "happy birthday dad" and I added 'old fart'. I can probably say that I do not love my dad. I do appreciate him though. I can't remember the last time I did love him. I wish he was more of a father to me, but that chance is long past. I think he is a very nice person and a good dad to both of my brothers, but even after all the repairing I have tried he has failed as a father to me. Granted, I think a lot of it has to do with getting back at my mom (how immature) but nonetheless that is who God gave me as my dad and I accept it and make the most of it.
