Starting off with just one panel from Adventure Comics #0, because I'm madly in love with Francis Manapul and the way he draws Krypto especially, although his Clark is not half bad at all:
Codename: Patriot was a one-shot meant to fill in some backgrounds on the various new Super-family characters. I found Thara's backstory interesting for the way it captures her creepy (and possibly well-founded) religious intensity:
The two of them climb the volcano to find blood bloom plants:
Kara is attacked when she gets too close to the edge:
Meanwhile, in World of New Krypton, Kal is holding things together with some difficulty in the wake of Zod's attempted assassination.
It would be really, really wrong to find Superman in a military costume holding a gun hot, yes it would.
Kal brings back the dead assassin and tries to stall the voices which are blaming Earth for the attempt and threatening to invade:
The Religious Guild is creepy. But Kal's speech is gorgeous. However, the tide is turned for certain only when General Zod makes an appearance to argue against an invasion:
You know, Zod, you might want to avoid muttering your giveaway villain lines as you pass out...even written in faint print, we can totally read them.
One of General El's first acts is to call his sweet puppy-gif friend Tyr of the Labor Guild to him, for a really difficult scene:
I've discussed this scene at length with
shardsofblu , and I still can't quite decide how I feel about it. My gut instinct was that Tyr deserved to be chewed out, especially after pulling out the lame "I do what I'm told" excuse (that's never good). But I've seen other people say it was too harsh for Kal's character, that he should have been more understanding to someone under the pressures Tyr is--and indeed, Kal does seem very close to the breaking point emotionally there. No matter how you read it, it's a rough scene.
Ah, did I forget to mention that the Kryptonians have decided they need a moon for Krypton, so they've decided (in a move that most certainly does not smack of hubris at all!) to take Callisto from orbit around Jupiter and use it. However, something has gone wrong in the process because in the middle of the move a bunch of Thanagarians have shown up and begun pummeling the Kryptonians:
And, of course, heading right for New Krypton! Dun dun DUN!
Next issue: Kal deals with a Thanagarian commander who reminds me of Shayera from the animated series in some very delightful ways.
