Yuletide Letter!

Hello, you amazing person, you! That you match up with me on any of these fandoms thrills me to the core. That you're willing to create something for me from one of them--oh, that's gift enough already. Everything from here on in is entirely optional--mostly I just like the opportunity to go on and on about things I love, knowing you love at least ( Read more... )

*bows and blushes* Agent/Vector is the most awesome thing, and I confess I knew very little about Chiss when I picked that race, but I really ought to go read the Thrawn series (having peeked at your letter in turn!)

Darn, now I'm tempted to sign up for Yuletide after all, just in the incredibly remote chance your my assignment and I can write an A Study in Emerald fic!

My husband and I have been tossing around ideas about it all week, it's such an amazing idea of a story with so many possibilities...

It's like a Platonic Ideal of a superhero world, where there are resonances with DC and Marvel, but everything is fresh and beautiful and humane.

Such an apt description of this fandom.

It really is! I've been so happy to see it come back... The hiatus hasn't seemed to dull his edge at all, either, I've loved the recent stories.

I'm pretty sure Moriarty was lawful evil in ACD's original, too.

You've got a good point there--I said that because it seemed to me that Holmes is concerned with preserving law and order and Moriarty is dedicated to tearing it down, but really he's more interested in setting up his own "shadow network" which runs on fairly structured lines, like a dark reflection of the government. Which I guess still works just fine with Holmes running an organized resistance!

It's interesting that most recent "remakings" of Moriarty have him as much more chaotic and Joker-like, just wanting to watch the world burn. I wonder what it says about modern society that we find that more frightening (and at the same time more appealing, in a dark way) than a more structured approach to evil...

This is probably a silly question, and I've been meaning to ask you this for years now, but what exactly is Yuletide?

Oh, and thank you for the "A Study in Emerald" link! I think I would've enjoyed it more if I actually knew anything about Lovecraft, or remembered how the original ACD story went. . . . *sweatdrops* (For some reason, though, now I want Conan in this universe. . . .)

I haven't watched Elementary (maybe I should've? I only saw a plot summary of it on Singapore Airlines's in-flight entertainment catalog for this month), either, but what I know is that in this adaptation, Watson is a female (her name is Joan) and the series takes place in-I'm guessing, modern-day-New York. Several months ago, my youngest sister, moonlitdawn had called the series a Sherlock ripoff, LOL. (That said, I've only seen the pilot of Sherlock on TV. I should watch more if it, I know, but I try to avoid watching stuff illegally, especially if it's legally available in a language I can understand.)

This is probably a silly question, and I've been meaning to ask you this for years now, but what exactly is Yuletide?

Yuletide is basically a small-fandom festival, where people ask for fic from very tiny or very new fandoms and are matched with people who say they can write them. It comes from that sort of "Dang it, I wish I could find someone who was willing to write something based in that one obscure kid's show from the 1970s...they've got to be out there somewhere!" So I submitted those four prompts to the organizers, and they're going to find someone who has said they're willing to write for those fandoms, and assign them my prompts! In return, I'll get someone else's obscure fandom that I say I feel up to writing.

Conan isn't obscure enough for it, alas, or I would have nominated it!

I haven't seen Elementary, and it's definitely capitalizing on the popularity of Sherlock, but it seems to have its own vibe and is pretty different from the BBC version. A lot of that is the gender-swap--Joan seems to be a lot more ( ... )
