Yuletide Letter!

Hello, you amazing person, you! That you match up with me on any of these fandoms thrills me to the core. That you're willing to create something for me from one of them--oh, that's gift enough already. Everything from here on in is entirely optional--mostly I just like the opportunity to go on and on about things I love, knowing you love at least ( Read more... )

This is probably a silly question, and I've been meaning to ask you this for years now, but what exactly is Yuletide?

Yuletide is basically a small-fandom festival, where people ask for fic from very tiny or very new fandoms and are matched with people who say they can write them. It comes from that sort of "Dang it, I wish I could find someone who was willing to write something based in that one obscure kid's show from the 1970s...they've got to be out there somewhere!" So I submitted those four prompts to the organizers, and they're going to find someone who has said they're willing to write for those fandoms, and assign them my prompts! In return, I'll get someone else's obscure fandom that I say I feel up to writing.

Conan isn't obscure enough for it, alas, or I would have nominated it!

I haven't seen Elementary, and it's definitely capitalizing on the popularity of Sherlock, but it seems to have its own vibe and is pretty different from the BBC version. A lot of that is the gender-swap--Joan seems to be a lot more assertive about Sherlock's quirks, and Sherlock seems much warmer in general. It's also a lot better with representation issues--more interesting female characters, more characters of color, a cool trans* character.

Though when people say it's groundbreaking to have a female Watson, I always kind of want to claim that Ran is already a female Watson, really. :)

(All that said, I adore Sherlock, it gets me right in the fannish id with its characterization and the cinematography and direction are brilliant.)
