"I wasn't sneaking," Bilbo said indignantly. "I was just walking. We hobbits are naturally very quiet."

"If only that were true," muttered Thorin.

*grins*

Heading to Annúminas is a great way to start Bilbo back towards the Shire. I'm enjoying this very much.

Oh man, I love your icon here! Because yes, Annuminas is so close it's just upriver! Just...take a left and you'll be there... :)

Bilbo's pretty good at riddles. And also has a fair knowledge of horticulture. Maybe they should hang on to him a while...

I'm imagining Thorin scratching his head and grumbling "Riddles and flowers? Dang! If only we had someone along who knew much about those..." and Bilbo kind of timidly raising his hand and then giving up... :)

"Well, lad, we could hardly not hear you, could we?" Balin grinned and rubbed at his ear.

Haha. Tell him Balin. *chuckles*

I'm still very much enjoying their journey and love your characterizations, especially Bilbo's.

Balin getting cheeky with his Prince kind of cracks me up. :) I've been having so much fun dragging them over the areas in Middle Earth that Tolkien didn't spend much time on! And Bilbo, Bilbo is just an endless joy to write. I'm so glad you're enjoying him too!

Oh how I love Tolkien's world - and your extended version of it! One of the only places imaginable where "memorize this poem, it is a matter of life and death" actually makes sense.

ROFL, it's so true! Re-reading his work, it's just amazing how permeated with song and poetry it is, how important it is. So it made some sense to me to have Thorin tearing around the country on a quest from a poem... :)

Thorin thought of Erebor in the grip of his mad father. Dís was apparently in Ered Luin and would be for months. For all he knew, their father had sent her there to get rid of her. And Frerin--Thorin loved his younger brother, but he had never had the spine to defy their father.

Time was running out.

*wibbles* *pets Thorin gently*

"So there's an even older library out there?" Kíli shook his head in amazement. He looked at the other dwarves. "Well, what are we waiting for? Let's pack up and get going!"

Aww, Kili! *pets him*

Fíli looked nervous, but he shook his head. "Kíli and I are staying with you, Uncle Thorin. No matter what."

FILI! *hearts him*

"He's trying to say the boys might be safer with us than with Prince-Regent Thráin," said Dwalin.

Thorin winced as though Dwalin had struck him, but said nothing.

*wibbles* It must be so painful for all of them - that they're safer away from their own family is... *wibbles again*

Yeah, that really hurt--that "home" and "safety" don't mean the same place anymore...*sighs for them*

I'm so glad you liked Fili and Kili here, they're so cute sometimes! And yes, yes, it's never really crossed Fili's mind that Uncle Thorin could die, he's always been bigger than life to him...

Hee! Also, I love the little discussion about Deathless - it's strange to see him with Orcrist, but kinda cool to see more Deathless at the same time, you know?

I miss Orcrist so much! *sniffles* You know what I miss more? That I can't call him Thorin Oakenshield, because that never happened! It's killing me!

Aww! *pets them all* They were all very brave, especially Bilbo, really, given that it's entirely out of his range of experience... It's true, just keeping up is bravery for someone with no experience with these things! I know I'd just lie down and refuse to move ever again ( ... )
